Adhesive for side sill insulation.. what do you use?

It appears the factory insulation is held in place with some black high-temp adhesive... Anyone know where I can buy this??

I found some adhesive that Dow Corning makes, and was designed for the aerospace inductry. It says, will withstand temps "UP TO" 500 degrees. Will that work?? Im running RT Cats/Corsa exhaust. Do the sills get above 500 degrees? I was thing probably 200 or so, would be max..Even under summer conditions.

Just get some high temp (orange/red) RTV silicone at your local part store.

That is fine ron, NO WAY the inner portion of the heat shields where the adhesive goes gets anywhere near 500 degrees. Think about how badly you would burn you legs when getting out of the car with shorts on. You skin would stick to the sill even if it got up to 300.

I used "Ultra Black RTV" made by Permatex. It works great and allows removal in the future.

was thinking about using that as well.. But does it actually hold? I didnt think that stuff had any adhesive capabilites, and was simply a gasket maker..

Most RTV's are also adhesives too. Tailored one way or another to tweak, marketed and packaged to compliment.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need adhesive at all?

The insulation is pretty much molded to the shape so it stays in place anyway.

Last night I removed the factory insulation, due to burn through from the stock cats. I found a nice replacement piece from a salvaged viper. When I went to remove the stock piece. Its held in by adhesive.. m just worried if I "lay" the replacement piece in there. it will move, and rattle around. No?? There must be a reason they use adhesive from the factory..

The fit inside the sills seemed pretty snug anyway, I would think once you form it back into the sill, it isn't going anywhere. That stuff is pretty thick, and holds it's shape well.

My insulation was still very firmly secured by this adhesive.. Would just like to put it back together the "right" way. Thats all.. Im OCD like that.. Hence the reason Im replacing the insulation, all because of a 4in.x4in. burn through.. I know, I know.

If I could dissect all of the noise inside that car from exhaust, engine, wind, road etc, I would never conclude that any part of that is from "side sill rattle."

Im sorry to hear that... My car is tight an original.. It has no rattles of any kind... Yes, this stuff will make noise in there, if its loose enough... Do a search.. Im looking to put this back together the right way..

Just use OEM (or high quality) Urethane windshield adhesive,super strong bond,and will NOT come lose. Has worked great on my viper for years!

Just reinstalled the sides last week after installing a new Corsa and HF cats.

No glue and no rattles at all. The original glue had long lost it's holding power anyway. When I took the sides off the insulation came out real easy.

As the guy before said, I think all you are creating is a fire hazard with the new glue. Most likely it will not hold anyway.

I have taken an bunch of these apart and never once glue them back in. I would agree it is a fire hazard and they do not rattle if you form them around the exhaust

My cats are aftermarket Random Tech, and are MUCH smaller than stock. So Im just worried this "space" will allow room for the insulation to move around.. What do you think??

Honestly, I would prefer NOT to glue them back in... Just had assumed this was a must..

Do want you want but......this starting to sound like "Hey those extra bolts I ended up with after the rebuild were for nothing" "the factory always does extra stuff you really don't need". Of course you can mash the insulation around the exhaust. Did you notice the areas where the insulation came into contact with the exhaust are corroded? So you can mash the insulation around your exhaust, then if your lucky enough with time the stainless insulation will file it's way into your $ 5,000 per side sills.

Guys, I don't think I'd be mashing the insulation around the exhaust. The insulation is supposed to be attached to the sill for a reason. To keep them from resting on the pipes and burning up. There is supposed to be air flow along the pipes for cooling. Don't block the flow From the header pipe entrance to the rear by packing the insulation in too tight. Been there done that and almost burned up my car by using extra insulation.
