Already having two GTSs in the past I was looking towards another but came across a great deal on a Gen 3 coupe and decided to try something different.

The main thing I dislike about this car is my ability to keep it in control, while the car is out of control. For example when i try and drift the car it fights me and almost feels like it wants to straighten out instead of letting me keep it in a drift and letting me control where it goes with the feathering of the gas. Feels more like my old Z06 did. My GTS was so effortless to maneuver around with the tires blazing LOL What gives????

Is there something different in the suspension? Rear end?

P.S. No im not talking about doughnuts in the parking lot!

Are the tires hard from age, this can hurt control a lot, another thing that would help control more would be the shocks ;-)

Mark this day in history as the first day someone has complained that the Viper wants to go too straight.

Everything else I've heard is "man this thing will kill you sideways in the split of an instant!" haha!

Rear tires are about two years old. Same condition as my old GTS tires. Shocks are factory on this SRT10. My gts acted the same way with coilovers and factory shocks.

I'm pretty sure pigs are flying and hell has frozen over! I'm one of the few that feels safer in these cars when they are sideways LOL

Do you have the stock run-flat tires? Those things are wicked awful.... and with the rigidity of the sidewall I would think would not like that lateral drifting..... which brings me to another point..... with the cost of these tires why the heck would you intentionally burn through the tires!?!?

We all enjoy our vipers in our own ways. Some like to do 200mph @ Texas mile, others a 9sec 1/4 mile runs or 50-150 roll races. I just happens love to drift my viper :) Anyway you look at it, its an expensive hobby :) The rear tires are nitto invos.

I do that at the track. Have been nicknamed 'the drift king' by my track buddies. Also have had the corner workers stand up and clap and give me the thumbs up. Alot of times though I've lost it and ended up in the weeds. This car has a fine line between the beautiful drift and the oops I lost it. I am a tire dealer, and am my own best customer in the summer. Was running the Kumho XS for the drifting antics as they are very predictable compared to other tires. I started running Sport Cups and had to learn how to drive clean because of the grip. Now I'm planning to step up the the R6. That will mean no more drifting, but way faster.

I used to run Invo's as well. Had no problem drifting with those. I actually burned through a set of rears in one track day. I was giving rides that day, and felt obligated to be as entertaining as possible. (providing a killer Viper experience for the passengers)

I have Invo's on my Corvette and don't have a problem getting the rear 'loose'. Maybe it's the way you initiate the drift. If you are depending on throttle and power like Sam the crazy Swede, then that's the problem. If your previous cars were boosted then there's the difference. the Gen 3 in stock trim will not drift with throttle only, Sam's car has a Paxton and he initiates drift in 3rd / 4th gear at 90mph. I can't do that. I am power sliding the car in uphill sweepers and slow hairpin turns. I am usually 2nd gear, sometimes 3rd, I use weight transfer(trail braking)/abrupt steering input/and throttle to 'toss the car' and initiate a slide. Then opposite lock and modulate throttle to drive the car sideways on corner exit. About 1 out of 5 look pretty. 1 out of 50 in the weeds. The rest are unpredictable fun. .....If you do try to drift the gen 3 with throttle only, the car is more apt to bite and just spin into the weeds -don't ask how I know.

I feel your pain. Although I don't go around drifting, i still notice a huge difference. I went from a 99 GTS to my current 08 coupe. The new coupe feels much more stable and controlled (for a Viper). I love the difference but can definitely see your issues. I suggest spending some more time behind the wheel. You may realize higher RPMS do the trick, different tires, or even lower gears help out.

Agreed good point....... I need to have more fun than just driving back and forth to work..... do you think my local popo would mind me drifting around town??

Watch out for cops! A few years back, I got a 'speed exibition' ticket for drifting the car in front of the popo. (I didn't see him until it was too late) Needed a lawyer for that one. Crap like that made me just start going to the track to get my jollies. .............plus the risk of ending up in someones front yard.

I went from gen2 to gen3 and then gen4. I track and play. I found the gen2 to be on ice when I played with it, doing donuts and what not was cake. Drifting was a got it, got it, holy **** don't got it, experience. The gen3 was a much improved feel to me, I could drift it with confidence, although it bit a few times and with zero warning it would just go from nice drift to spin. Very touchy. The gen4 is nuts, it's like a stability control in that rear. I feel very confident gently drifting it around, as it starts to go too far, you can actually feel it and adjust and it comes right back like its helping you. Amazing the difference the differential makes .. Hmmm.

Now I've had 8 mustangs also, all modded. Like my current GT500, over 600rwhp and 295 super sports, I'll drift that thing from my parking space to the lunch counter and back, talk about fun. But, I digress. To your question, there's a huge difference in feel and characteristics across gens IMO, and you might just need to get used to it and you'll be golden.

Dave.

Note to self... Never buy a car from anton28:rolleyes: :lmao:

Lol good one. Yes I'm a viper owner that actually drives their viper like they are meant to be driven. Yes in the rain too! No garage queen here. My last 896rwhp GTS got was used and abused. Why would you build a 1000hp car otherwise?!?!?

I know what you mean by sweets ***. It just so much harder to find it and keep your car in it in this SRT10 then my old GTS.

Your my kinda guy Allan! Sounds like a might need a few track days to push this car and learn its limits. The city streets are just not a good way to learn a new car......

Allan iam initiating the drift with throttle on the streets. Typically going 10 miles an hour or so at the track is a diffrient story. My old gts was boosted but even before it was I could initiat a drift with throttle only.

Finally someone who knows exactly the diffrience I speak off. I'm glad I'm not crazy lol I do love how much more stable the car is but dislike it at the same time when I want to play. I was thinking about gears and def more time behind the wheel. It does feel like it needs much more RPM then the GTS did.

Bummer man! I got one of those for a burn out 10 years ago or so. Was not fun to deal with.

Dave that's exactly what the gen 2 felt like to me, one ICE. That to me made it easier to predict and control. I'm just so surprised how diffrient the two cars feel. Did you find that your gen 3 needed more rpm to initiate the drift then the gen 2 car?

I also can relate. I had a 99 supercharged gts. I used to tap the throttle and could spin it around into a parking space. I don't think I could do that with my 08. It just much harder
to rev the engine accurately, especially with the drive by wire.
