I use two relatively easy and inexpensive methods for removing the grey finish off of a Gen I dash. The first is Easy Off oven cleaner in the orange can. Apply a good coat all over the face of the dash and let sit until the finish can be wiped off. Apply more as needed.

Second, is denatured alcohol. The stuff is cheap and works well for final cleaning and prep. It removes the finish just as well as easy off but it evaporates too quickly, hence the reason I use it for cleaning and/or small parts only.

Once you get the finish off some final prep with fine sandpaper will ensure the paint adheres properly.

For painting, I use Krylon Fusion. It chemically bonds to the plastic and makes for an inexpensive, durable, and attractive finish. You can buy it at Wal-Mart.

I just finished my third dash and this method works very well. It's cheap, doesn't take much time, and the final product is quite pleasing.
