Why was there so much detonation on the motors? New ones look great!

The first engine was a stock Gen-4 that came apart on the track. It was upgraded to a VS-X race engine. The stock Gen-4's come apart all the time on the track in this exact same way. The pistons simply cannot handle the stress, and even the slightest detonation over time causes exactly what you see in the first set of photos.

The second engine was already a VS-X, and was refreshed after two seasons since we built it the first time in Spring 2011. It was run very low on oil by accident, and also was well over the number of engine ours it should have had on it before a refresh. It was refreshed, and received a number of new upgrades and other small changes in the process. No detonation damage. This engine had failed as a stock engine back in 2009 and was rebuilt by Arrow as an ACR-X engine for the 2010 season. It then failed again as an ACR-X engine at the end of the 2010 season, at which time we were contacted for the rebuild contract.

+1 interesting. Looks good, other than the piston, were they stock rebuild?

Answered at the same time you posted above...

No, they were built as VS-X race engines when rebuilt- a LOT more than just pistons. The first engine was stock when it failed, the second engine was damaged by accident with dangerously low oil levels during a qualification lap at nearly 3 quarts low and an incorrect oil control valve- but it was overdue for a refresh anyway by nearly a full season.
