Hey guys, can anyone comment with the real numbers that show difference in acceleration with and without lightweight flywheel? Does it really worth the trouble of putting knew flywheel? Is acceleration really faster?
Thanks.

Many posts in archives.

Opinions vary by useage.

Street / road course use normally aspirated = good modification.

Supercharged, not so much.

accel and decel should be faster its a rotating mass and depending on how much you shave it should be like adding hp. or feel like that. but it takes less for the motor to spin it. take a quarter for instance flick it on a counter and see how it spins then take a penny. easier or the theory is there. does that make since in a weird sort of way?

Was a very good mod for me. Fidanza makes a decent product.

I don't have numbers to justify but just plain ole "ass feel" time. To me, it really woke up the motor and now gets into the revs much quicker and stronger. Then again, I also added 3.55 gears so hard to tell the benefit of one over the other, but the combo was great. Car felt like a dog before. That is the best way I can describe it.

It might be worth your while to check out the total weight of the new dual disk clutch set up and the fidenza clutch set up. Total weight on the Gen. 4 may be less and be a better over-all package.

I understand the theory behind it, but was wondering if anyone has 0-60 and 1/4 mile numbers to prove the improvement over stock flywheel.

Good weight savings too. I had one on my GTS and really liked it plus it was an inexpensive mod. The steel oem was around 33 lbs. and the aluminum was around 18 lbs. I believe.

I have the Fidanza alum flywheel on my Z06, just put it on when I put a spec 2 clutch in, love it. Can't wait to feel the difference at the track in 2 wks!

i love mine with stock clutch. no driving issues whatsoever. Great on downshifting rev matching.
There was a very good article (if I can find ill post) about a vett that had a lightweight flywheel and clutch installed and it accel. two seconds faster from 0-150 and throughout the rpm range.
Highly recommend but you might as well change the stock clutch (cheap at $180) when you do it. Total parts and labor i paid was about $800 ($580 in parts and a little over two hrs in labor at a dodge dealer).

As many have said it does rev quicker. Great mod.

So nobody has the record of 1/4 mile times before the light weight flywheel and after?

I do, but they would have to be apples-to-apples: mods to mods, at the SAME TRACK. NINE replies above expressed POSITIVE feedback on this mod!!!!

The facts are very clear on this mod: DO IT, especially if you are replacing a clutch anyway. Then, also choose the lighter-weight clutch kits (as from PartsRack website, thanks!)

Your 1/4 mile times MAY improve, but only if you are a good driver! If you ****, they wont. What WILL improve, even for rookies, is the trap-speed.

-Wheelspin is minimized, but forces throttle feathering, requires finesse. Success = your 60' times drop!
--Your acceleration after hook up happens faster. Accelerator feels snappier!
---Your braking in-gear improves.
----Track Rats will see quicker lap times due to improved accel/decel.
-----Lumpy cam cars: 96.5 - 98 and aftermarket? You may notice a rougher idle

Hey Jon B,

Any info on 08,09 Fidanza flywheels. It looks like you have to buy the flywheel and dual clutch as a package. Do you have these available, or do you have any information on them?

We have done ONE lighter G4 FW+Clutch package, for a NASCAR driver who loves his #25000 Viper, and uses it a LOT for drags at Charlotte. 3 pro-guys hammer this car!
They ate thru 2 OEM clutches pretty quick, the 2nd sponsored by MotorSports.

The package was not Fidanza however. He loves the pedal feel, the take-up action, and his crewchief loves the weight savings. {crew chief says I can use driver name...I prefer not to except on the phone)

HAPPY EASTER ALL ! ON Monday I will rise again.......

Had two Viper with stock and now the FE GTS with the lightweight flywheel...not much of a difference. Not worth any money. Just my 2 cents.

Hey JonB, as soon as Vipernut's ACR gets built, you might consider putting in a direct phone line to him. He might be your best customer in 09!

i might be wrong and this doesn't apply to the guys n this thread i dont think...

ask chuck tator for the exact details and brand of flywheel/clutch but he had a paxton car (lime green gen3) that was seriously trashed cause of it. the flywheel came thru the floor boards and just missed the drivers foot. but this was a modded paxton car too. not sure of the details and like i said, talk to tator for more. just a heads up for modded cars.

Explaining Viper things to you
Plum... If I remember correctly, and I am working on a Stage 3 Bitter Beer Face, that was a CrMo flywheel not a Fidanza.

Excellent post though. Exploding rotating parts are unhealthy.

what about the comp coupe flywheels that Dodge was/is selling through mopar performance. Not quite as light as an aluminum one but much lighter than stock none the less.

When I put my Fidanza on 5.5yrs/52K miles ago, I talked the main man at Fidanza about flywheel horror stories. At that time, they had never had an incident over thousands of applications. He told me their R&D has their flywheels spinning at 2-3 times redline for testing purposes. For the last 30K miles, I've introduced considerably more TQ with the blower. Actually both cars have blowers and Fidanzas. The Fidanza people will argue the point about rotating mass,TQ, and HP

As for benefits, I consider the flywheel and gears the best mods for SOTP on a stock car. I think there are numbers someone posted one time to bear out the flywheel part. I noticed the flywheel difference the very first upshift I made out of the garage. There is no downside to the light flywheel. Throw in the better braking on the track and it was a no brainer for me. Those who say stalling is an issue betray their lack of clutch experience. Heck, we're in 6+ hour long parades every year. The Viper is by far the easiest stick car I've ever owned -- even with the flywheel. We do have the easier cam, but I have a friend with a 97 who also has never had drivability issues.

Phil, I remember that story from Chuck because we were both stuffing ourselves with deviled eggs when he was discussing it at his tech session. :D It was a ceramic clutch and the broken parts almost severed the driver's leg but did cut through at 1" steel frame member near the firewall. Remember it broke off a chunk of the block too. :omg:
