Anyone pulling a trailer with their Viper?

I caught a few pics here once of someone I don't recall, who has a slot in the long black area down low in the rear bumper. He slides in the hitch as he needs it through the slot to bracketry he's installed.

Anyway, I might have use for the ability to haul slicks etc on a small trailer like I see owners of older Vettes doing for Pump Gas Drag events and so on.

Mainly I'm wondering if it all has to be fabricated, or if there's a particular already available hitch made for another car, that gets you 90% of the way there as a starting point when wanting a light-duty hitch a Viper.

I found some photos of Nadine's set up doing a Yahoo 'nadine viper trailer' search.

She brought it out through where the rear muffler used to be though. I'd want to keep the rear muffler if I could.

I've not seen too much that would lend itself as starting materials. The tongue with the ball can be purchased, but the receiver and frame mount must be fabricated. However, there is so little material, if you could find someone that can weld, you can make it in less than a day with simple flat stock. The only precision is lining up the outlet with the blacked out strip, and that's not hard.

You will need the converter for yellow turn signals to red. The taillight wires in the trunk are easy to find, and I ran them through the rubber plug in the floor of the trunk. Just make one slice and you can push the trailer plug through when needed and pull it back in when not.

Myself, I don't plan on poking it through the back bumper. But it's a novel idea.

I don't understand the 'convertor for yellow turn signals to red' part though.

Whatever trailer lights you have would flash the color of their lens once connected to the car's electrical system.


Why? Well if I upgrade to softer/stickier M/T slicks for example, I'd rather trailer them the 100 mile round trip to the strip than drive on them.

Or..having towing capability could maybe help me avoid the 100 mile r/t drag strip trip AND wearing out expensive slicks altogether (?)

Because driving to the track in a Viper with a trailer is more fun than driving any SUV towing a Viper.

Because driving well at the track becomes somehow more rewarding when you "load up the trailer" and ride your sweaty horse home.

Because it's not a trailer queen, it's a trailer king.

Because I can drive 155 and drive 55.

Because I can pass the truck pulling a blown, 742 RWHP, blue&White, Paxton Novi 2000, custom fuel system ,Vec II, B&B headers and exhaust,K&N,Alum.flywheel,B&M ripper,MGW,Unitrax,Kumhos, 3:55 rear gear GTS on the way home towing my trailer hauling four tires and jack!!

And because in an RT you can carry exactly zero spares if you carry any tools or supplies whatsoever. And with a 13 year old car I do.

Vipers have amber turn signals, a separate bulb for red brakes and a separate filament for red taillights. Trailers use the same filament for the red turns and brakes, and another one for tailights. To get the three filaments on a Viper to control the two filaments on a trailer you'll need the converter.

There is a guy over in Windsor who has a yellow GTS that he has converted to side exhaust and then installed a removeable hitch in the rear exhaust port. He has a yellow Prowler trailer modified to mount Gen II GTS wheels. It is an impressive rig. I have a link to the pictures somewhere, but can't find them just this minute. Unfortunately I don't have his name or contact info.

Nadine has her hitch in the rear exhaust port too. I really want to keep my rear muffler where it's at

I can put something together. I just thought I'd post and see how people were doing it, and if there was a shortcut to making the entire thing.

Tom, the guest link you emailed me only seems to show one picture of the hitch bracket assembly on the floor. Maybe I'm not clicking on the correct area..

Sorry, probably my fault.

It was surprising to find the styrofoam "support" and the fiberglass "bumper" behind the rear fascia.

The hitch on the floor was something that Andrew C. had bolted to the underside of the frame on his Viper. It was heavy, worked fine, and positioned the ball tongue under the rear exhaust pipes. It had to be heavy duty because it was extended quite a bit back from where it attached to the frame.

it did have the Guiness world record about 6 years ago, GTS owner lived just 30 seconds from my house before taking the car to florida and selling it. Guy on this forum now owns the record braking car (record was around 127mph) The last time i looked the record was currently held by a ****** Cosworth

the same GTS also held the worlds fastest 'blind driver' record too, instructions was fed via a radio for the driver to repond to

Has anyone figured this out on a GTS keeping the stock exhaust? I would love to be able to haul some race tires to the track on a small trailer behind the Viper.

You should know, Tom, you welded the hitch for me.

Yep, I used to trailer my tires to lots of events, but I got nervous after a while that if anything ever went wrong at the track, how would I get home ? Plus, the stress of changing tires at the track was to much. I like to take my time, set the car up at home, check out the brakes, clean everything up, bring it to the track and just unload and go fast !

Hell, I used that thing to go out to St Louis VOI, but by the time Tennesee VOI came along I already bought a tralier and a truck.

Sorry if I don't have a close up of the hitch but I did not cut into the bumper. This came out just under the exhaust and was a great protection for the exhaust by the way.

The whole set up is now out with JonB. Last I heard he was going to try to make these up for sale, but I'm not sure what happend. Mine originally came from Chuck Tator, who was happy to get it off his garage floor for a case of his favorite beverage.
