Has anyone ever participated in SCCA SoloII? Just wondering if it is fun and worthwhile. Anything learned about the handling of your car?

Chattanooga Tn. SCCA solo 2 on August 4th,I havn't taken the Viper but have been many times in other cars. I will probably take the Viper this time. Are you going??

I have run Solo II twice in my Viper. For me it has been a great place to learn the behavior of the car without having to worry about damaging the car. Definetly ride with someone and have someone ride with you that has some driving experience. I have learned to be smooth and in turn my times get better. Have a great time!

Good fun, good learning ground if the course is long enuf.
a 50-second + course is WAY more useful than a 35 second.

PULL THE SPORT SHIMS on your second day! (See owners manual or call me)

Be careful tho...as the Fla-SE VCA found, you CAN bang a car in Solo formats.

Remember this: Look WAAYYYY ahead.

I have been running most solo-2 events in the Sacramento Ca. area for the past year and a half, and really enjoy this type
of racing.

Auto-cross is a good way to compete without risking major damage to your car or yourself (or your competitor, for that matter.) In this venue, you race around a flat track made up of cones usually on a large asphalt area (airport, parking lot, etc.)racing the clock. (Kind of like a down hill ski event.) Speeds rarely get over about 60mph, but a I have been on a few courses where I hit the rev limiter in second gear which is about 80mph. If you get into trouble, all you do is hit a few cones, and or flat-spot your tires... Most courses require 30-60 seconds per lap to complete. SCCA events give each driver 4 laps per day while American Auto-X allows 5 laps each. The best lap of the day is used to tally scores/points. Oh, there is a class for nearly every car ever produced... You see them all on any given day.

In general, this type of racing favors lighter, nimble cars, with great handling and very good brakes. Mazda RX-7's and the new Honda 2000's are amazingly fast, for example. Horsepower & Torque help, but aren't the most important factors in getting around the tight courses quickly. Unfortunately, the Viper is relatively heavy and the(non-ABS) Brakes really ****...

The Corvette guys in the Sacramento area are really good drivers with extremely well prepared cars (several national champs here)
They usually smoke me off, but at least I am able to beat most
of the rest of the Vets/Cobras/Porsches/etc. that are like my Viper, stock... As far as handling goes, Improving the front/rear brake bias is a must, and setting up the front end with more camber and tow out helps. Oh, Hoosiers give you a 2-3 second per lap advantage as well.

One final note, it seems totally unfair, but the Viper GT-2's and ACR's are not able to run in the "Super Stock" category with other GTS's and 1997+ C5 Vets, apparently because of the smooth tubes installed at the factory, we must run in the ASP (A street prepared) category which allows quite a bit of non-stock tweaking to engines, drive trains, suspensions, aerodynamics, etc. This class includes everything from 4WD Porsches, Ferraris, Z6 Vets, M5 BMW's, etc.

Bottom line, give Solo-2 a try. It is safe and cheap and the best thing is you can drive your stock Viper to and from events and still be competitive. Beware, it can be habit forming!!

The following is from the SCCA In Sac. CA., this is a great event. Last year we had SCCA members from the East coast make the trip for a few seconds (60 +/- seconds typical) of fun.

Check the N.CA web site for an registration or contact the SCCA directly, contact info follows.

"The Corvette Owners Club of Sacramento is hosting the renown American Muscle Car Team Challenge Autorcoss Event at Mc Clellan Air Park on October 19th & 20th, 2002. The maximum number entries is 80 drivers.

The entry fee is $95.00. This event will consist of 3 practice runs and 4 official timed runs on each day. A T-Shirt and a Saturday sit-down dinner is included in the entry fee. The final results will be based on the best run from the official times of each day, combined together as a team and compared to the total times of all the teams. Trophies will be awarded to each member of the winning and placing teams.

The maximum of number of drivers per car is two, and each driver will be on different teams. The teams will be selected by the committee from a random drawing. The selection of each team will not have more than one national champion level type driver and one beginning level driver.

Each car will be paxed according to the vehicle preparation, based on the SCCA rules as possible. The ladies will have a separate Pax factor than their respective open class. The vehicle entries running on true Street Tires with a Tire Wear Rating of 120 or greater, will be paxed with a special street tire paxed.

Hotel/Lodging is across from the Event site. The special room rates for the Lions Gate Hotel is:
Single/Double - $74.00/night
Suites - $109.00/night
Cottege Suites - $159.00/night

These rates are special. You will need to mention the keyword:
"AUTOCROSS" in order to get the special rates on the event dates and this includes Friday and/or Sunday evenings. The telephone numbers are:

Thanks for the advice from everyone, I am going to try it and see how it goes. It is in Lexington, Ky this Sun. (a one day event only) and for $30 you can't go wrong. I read the info on Super Stock class as far as mods to your car but it wasn't very specific on the websight. What would be my class with smooth tubes, gear change, and exhaust?

It's a lot of fun. The old runway/cross runway where we are lets us get 2 minute runs in. It's typically between 1 mile to 1.5 miles long.The course changes every time. $20 is all it cost for the day.(I also help set up the night before and tear down) We get at least 4 'official' runs in, running about 20 cars in 2 groups. The SS class is a little more forgiving than the ASP class we were in last year. It's pretty tough to beat the little AWD Subarus. A twin turbo Stealth with an excellent driver usually does well here. As we only do it for fun, my wife always rides with me which means we're pushing over 3800 pounds around the track. I am getting better as I was one of only 3 cars to break the 2 minute barrier last time out. Once they put the the 'factor' on me though--I took 7th overall. Going again this Saturday.

Everyone should give it a try

Oklahoma Augs used to do quite a bit of A-X. Funny, he's dropped completely off the map. Seems I remember him mentioning something about being a naval weapons specialist, along with his oilfield knowledge. Go figure...

Super Stock allows :
1. Catback exhaust
2. Shock absorber change ( similar type design available on car, but does not have to be stock ).
3. K&N filters
4. Stock rims or aftermarket ones that are the same size and within 1/4 inch of stock offset.
5. Hoosier Dot Racetires are legal - Roadrace or Autocross
6. Pads are free, as well as brake fluid.

This is a brief rundown, and if you want to give me a call I would be happy to assist with any other questions.

Your car right now is not legal for Super Stock , due to smooth tubes and the gear change, so you would run ASP.

Here's my analysis, for what it's worth.

Autocross:

8 hours standing around picking up cones
4 runs for a total driving time of under two minutes
= 0.4% driving fun

Drag racing:

4 hours in line waiting to drive
4 runs for a total driving time of 48 seconds
= 0.3% driving fun

Road course:

8 hours at the track
4 sessions for a total driving time of 2 hours
= 25% driving fun


Now if you factor in cost of entree fee, we find:

Autocross
2 minutes for $95 = $47.5 per minute driving

Drag Race
48 seconds for $20 = $25 per minute driving

Road course
2 hours for $200 = $1.66 per minute driving


Now the assumptions for this to make any logic are:

- you care more about driving than standing around talking and looking at cars
- you have limited time and/or money (or at least value how they are spent)
- you don't have a strong preference for one particular form of your driving entertainment
- risk and other costs (tires, mods, etc) are equal


Just my 2 cents, and I already know how I'd prefer to spend them.

$20 to $50 per event should be less than pocket change for most of us. If not, maybe one's ownership of expensive toys should be rethought. There's a lot more going on at autocrosses than listed. Talking, watching, listening is cheap at an auto-x event. When you don't discount the social aspect of it, you'd be surprised what you learn.

My autocross costs are equal to $1.66 per minute--same as your track cost. $20 per session/6 runs..all timed.

Sure $20-$50 is easy to spend for a day of fun, as is $200. I'm not really questioning the cost itself, I'll happily pay that. What bugs me about autocross is how little driving is actually done.

So if I spend a day at a roadcourse track, I get 6 hours of watching, listening, learning (agreed these are all good stuff)... AND ... I get to drive for 2 hours. A day at an autocross is 8 hours of socializing and 2-3 minutes of driving.

That's my point.

Yes, autocross and drag racing are fun. No doubt. But it's also a ton of waiting around. Like most of us, I'd rather be racing than talking about racing.

(And the rate of $95 dollars was taken from Fred Kinder's notice above. I agree there are cheaper options.)

The $95 dollar event is for 2 days and includes Dinner, awards, lunch for 2 days and coffee and doughnuts for 2 days.

Run time is 60+ sec. each. We expect 6-8 runs per day.

This event is a deal at $95.00
