ARCHER STARTS T1 SEASON WITH A WIN AT TWS
Starting right where he left off last year in the SCCA's Southwest Division, Bobby Archer drove his black No. 32 SuperClubs/ViperSpeed Viper to victory in the T1 class at the SCCA Polar Prix National held at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas on Sunday, February 16th. Archer's Viper, which is sponsored by SuperClubs Resorts, performed flawlessly over the weekend and, with the superior traction provided by Hoosier tires, looks to be a contender once again for the T1 National Championship.
On Friday, Archer qualified first out of ten cars in the T1 class for Saturday's race on a cold and wet track. After a post-qualifying technical inspection, Archer's Viper was disqualified because his check-engine light was illuminated, and he was moved to the back of the 44-car field for Saturday's race. Undaunted by this set-back, Archer set sail through the field when the green flag flew on Saturday. By lap 7, Archer had moved up to fourth overall and passed the Corvette Z06 of Bob Schader to take the T1 lead. Bobby took the checkered flag well ahead of Schader, but was disqualified from the race for the same illuminated check-engine light issue. After much positive discussion with race officials, Archer expects that an appeal for reinstatement of his win on Saturday will be successful.
Archer again qualified first for Sunday's race which was shortened to 30 minutes even before the race started due to extreme cold conditions. At the start of the race, a big accident occurred, wiping out much of the field and causing the first 20 minutes of the race to be run under caution. When the green flag waved, Archer stayed in front of Jay Mattus and Bob Schader and went on to claim his first win of the year. This time, there were no issues with the check-engine light during technical inspection before and after the race, and the victory on Sunday stood. Also of note on Sunday was the fourth place finish of ViperSpeed's Dan Fiorelli in just his second National race.
Next up for Bobby Archer and ViperSpeed is a NASA race on March 22 at the Motorsport Ranch in Ft. Worth. After the NASA race, scheduled races for the ViperSpeed drivers include: Corpus Christi (SCCA); April 25, Mid-Ohio (Viper Racing League (VRL)); May 3, Texas Motor Speedway (SCCA); May 24, Texas World Speedway (SCCA); June 21, Road America (SCCA); Sept. 15, Mid-Ohio (SCCA); Oct. 17, Motorsport Ranch (VRL); and Nov. 7, Texas Motor Speedway (VRL).
