Hi Ron,

I would bet money that the smoke didn't have anything to do with your computer trying to "learn your new driving style". If you notice this happen again, check the tube that connects the crankcase ventilation to the back of your air box (drivers side I think). The valve covers are vented in the front near the bottom and with sustained high RPM runs followed by hard braking some of the oil finds its way forward into the airbox. At that point, the oil is ingested back into intake, through the engine and out the exhaust, ie., the black smoke.

A remote reservoir with new hoses and fittings is one way to address the problem. I have seen small breathers that can be fitted right to the same connection points where the stock hoses exit the valve covers - I think Archer sells them.

If you are really serious and/or are planning to do a lot of road racing, the best way to clear up the situation is to eliminate the source. If you plug the existing valve cover vents and drill new holes in the top center of the valve covers, run new hoses to a remote reservoir/breather, then the movement of the oil during track maneuvers will not be a porblem.

Good luck and keep road racing!

Sonny, thanks for the reply. I've had the situation you describe happen to me on the dragstrip, however the smoke from burnng the Mobil 1 oil is almost white. This smoke was definately BLACK and had a completely different smell. And yeah you can bet your bippy I'll keep road racing and go faster, and faster and faster, well you get the idea.

Black smoke is ALWAYS fuel related.
Blue smoke is oil related
White smoke is water related

If that happen again, pull a few spark plugs and look at them.
That will tell you for sure what it is.

I agree with Sonny, it's probably coming from your valve cover vent tube that goes into the air box. The hard braking of track driving will send oil forward and then sucked into the air filter. Here's an after-market filter that will fix the problem, by collecting the oil that gets sent down the tubes. It has a drain valve at the bottom to empty the can once a year. The contact is: Kip at 303-697-5821.

I went road racing last weekend and for the second time I noticed black smoke billowing out of my exhaust pipes in the first session. It was pretty bad, especially for the open cockpit Vette behind me. It seemed to get a little better as the day progressed, I did feel maybe a little power loss but not much. A Viper tech there said it was the computer trying to "learn" the new driving style and it was running rich hence the smoke. Does anyone know if this is true? Anyone have experience with this? Is there a fix? Could it be something else? Thanks in advance.

I dont know. Mine did the same thing after alot of CITY driving, the first time I got on it. You think it may just be built up carbon blowing out? Especially if its not used to that driving?
