I stopped at the local Dodge dealer to get a part quote, and on the way out, went over to look at the Borla-made Mopar cat back exhaust on their still-not-sold 2002 FE GTS car. What a mess...the body just below the tips was splitting! Right along the right/inboard side of the left white stripe! Plus there was a lot of black goo on the body above and around the tip area. Looked like my weedwacker when it's running rich. I've only see one post here where someone said they extended their tips on this catback because of gunk coming out of the tips. Question is - Is there some long term effect to the body surrounding those big 4" tips on the Mopar/Borla catback?? Can the distance the distance the tips sticks out be adjusted a bit by how you put together the rest of the system at all? I haven't read of anyone having trouble like that. That dealer Final Edition had only 200 miles on it about 2 months ago.. seems like I remember the tips pressing on that lower area when I looked at it then, and I think I've read here it's common. I didn't notice the split then..
Odd that lower area just below the tips would split right along the inside line of the stripe..maybe the Viper tech cut it on purpose when he put it on (!).

I have that system and I havne't noticed any junk yet. I've had it on for about 200 miles and it seems to be fine. The only drawback I see is that the inlet is 2.5" and exit is 3" after the muffler. I'm going to have to replace the muffler since my CAT is 3" out and I have a reducer in there right now.

The Borla / Mopar cat-back is designed to be a direct fit to your stock exhaust, as are the B&B and Corsa. The stock cats exit at 2.5" OD. The 3" OD to 2.5" ID reducer is welded to the muffler on both the Borla and Corsa (though Corsa does offer a 3" ID).

You do not have to replace the muffler. Simply have someone cut off the reducer and weld on a 3" stub to make your 3" cat connection.

I have Sean's 3" HF cats with the Mopar/Borla and did exactly as he described! 2.5 section gone, and 3" all the way through now!
The sound is just AWESOME! Not a problem yet, no crap on the back either!
Hope it stays that way!

Can't imagine that it would be any different that the stock pipes. With mine, if I run it hard, I get some soot on my back end. Don't know if it is road dust or from the car running rich?

Sean,

When I spoke to someone at Borla they told me that indeed it is made for the stock CAT but the internal muffler is 2.5" still. So if the rest of my system is 3" that would still be a bottlneck. I had to add the reducer myself since I needed a way to connect the 3" exit from the Random CAt to the inlet of the Borla.

I'm thinking about getting a Dynomax straight thru to make everything at 3".

GTSnake, where in MI did you get your flywheel put on? Do you remember the installed price?

The pipe connection at the muffler is 3" - about an inch, or so, out it reduces
to 2 1/2"OD - you can use a chop saw (use the edge of the muffler as a guide)
slice the restriction off, and have an inch stubb off the muffler that is 3".
I then cleaned up the ID and welded 3" SS pipe to the stubb -
It is quite simple - and most muffler shops would do it for very little charge.

I had my flywheel done at Morton's Corvette shop in Pontiac. They are the only authorized Roe dealer in the area. I checked around dealerships which were quite expensive and some wouldn't even attempt it. They charged me $380 which was pretty reasonable but then they turned around and charged me $900 to put in a new exhaust which I think was way too high. My next mod will probably be done somewhere else.

HP, are you talking about the outlet size being 2.5"? Because in the Mopar/Borla CAT back the inlet size is 2.5" and stays that way until the exit which is 3". I would have to replace the whole muffler to eliminate the 2.5" restriction.

I was talking about the inlet reduced section - if yours is the same as mine,
the actual connection at the front of the muffler is 3" - but reduced in front
of the connection - I made that point, because unless you look closely or
take a gauge to it - it looks as if the front muffler connection is 2&1/2",
but it is not (at least not on mine). I actually had to cut real close to
get all the 2&1/2 off - the stubb I mentioned was probably less than an inch.

HP: Hmmmm, I'm going to have to take a closer look at mine. Maybe I won't have to change my muffler then. Thanx.
