I am purchasing a 97 Viper from an ad on this forum. I am having the car checked out by a third party. My concern is, how do I know that once I send the guy my $60,000 that the title is clear. Or for that if the car will show up at all. Is there any type of escrow service that handles these types of transactions?

From another Bruce . . .

Definitely use an escrow. Your local bank can set up an escrow for you. I would advise using a lawyer -- the few bucks spent will save you heartache later.

Good luck.

When I did my purchase, after I had the car checked out, I flew into town with the certified check in hand and swapped it for the car and title - is that not an option?

Are you saying that at some point in this transaction you anticipate sending a $60,000 certified check to the seller while he still has the car and the title? Sounds like a stretch. If this guy is anything but 100% honest, you could be headed for trouble. In the past, I have given my shipping company my certified check so at least I know I am getting something in the back of the truck for the $60,000 (although they asked me to sign a waiver indicating that they are not inspecting the car or the paperwork) Also, have him fax you a copy of the title so you can check for liens, etc. before you send the check. You will also know that you are actually paying the owner of the car. I am sure you already ran a carfax (which is good, but not 100%)

I hope it all works out!! Welcome to the club.

That is a HIGHLY modified car. I hope you have had it checked out. It also sounds like a good deal. Why not contact the Arizona VCA president and get a reference on the seller. If he owns three cars he is probably well known out there. Or ask here if anyone knows of him. If money is no objbect I might retain an attorney out there to handle the transfer and escrow the money. But the best thing to do is pre arrange shipping, fly there for just one day, give him his check, get the title and deliver the car yourself to the shipper. If the title is not clear the following has worked for me. Make two checks out, one to the lender for the amount to clear the title and the remainder to the seller. In the sellers presence place the title (signed off by the seller) and the check to pay off the balance in a fed ex envelope addressed to the lender, place another prepaid, preaddressed to you fed ex envelope inside the first, enclose instructions to the lender as to the fact that the car is being paid off and that all title paerwork should be forwarded to you. Contact his lender YOURSELF to get an accurate verified payoff before doing this, be careful that a payment date is not appraoching as that would change the number upwards if you roll through that date. Give the seller the other check for the balance. Take possesion of the car and deliver yourself to shipper, make sure you are using one with a warehouse to store the car until it ships, insured, bonded etc. Cab back to the airport, back home that night.

Lee,

I emailed the VCA in AZ. Good advice. I thought that 64k was an ok price for the car with all the mods. I hav eth name of a local Dodge dealer who is the local Viper guru. I am actually considering driving it back to NY (or maybe not).

Have Eddie Martin (viper Tech) check the car out before you fly into AZ!
Where is the car? You could have someone else that knows Vipers check it out first also.
I spend time in Pheonix/Scottsdale and could check it out in the next couple of weeks.

Good luck,

I sold mine sight unseen to a nice guy out in Ca.
no problems at all..
he mailed the check, another board member came and picked up his car. no prob.
i even sent a video of the car to him a head of time.
so, it depends on the guy your dealing with..
if he is a good guy.. no worries.
