It looks like the EPA just released the final gas mileage figures for the '08. Despite adding a whopping 90 horsepower to the output, the gas mileage INCREASED by 17% over the previous SRT10. So what does that mean for 2008 Viper buyers? Lower gas guzzler taxes - a LOT lower: Instead of the $3,000 we are so used to paying, the 2008 Viper will only be taxed $1700 - even lower than first estimated!

And here is the amazing bottom line: This car has a totally different and vastly improved drivetrain from front to back. Ninety more horsepower, better tires, better handling, better shifting, better "planting" with an improved rear end, as well as a brand new hood. Yet the 2008 will end up costing $50.00 less for the Roadster than in 2006 and (gulp) $550.00 LESS for the Coupe!!

Who says you can't have your cake and eat it too? :2tu:

Oh, and in chatting with some of the dealers and SRT folks over the weekend we were reminded that they were really pushing for Vipers to be sold through dealerships that have certified Viper techs and more of a Viper focus overall. We all know how some of the "ma & pa" dealerships didn't help Viper values by liquidating them after they collected dust in rural nowhere. Thus the renewed focus on "Viper-centric" dealerships. So when you order your '08 make sure that the dealership has the allocation and a Viper tech on staff. You don't want t be one of those folks from the old days of Viper ordering that talk about waiting over a year to get their car because the dealership couldn't get 'em...

They just get better and better. Do you happen to know what the MPG ratings are? I would assume something around 14/24 or so?

Well that is the kicker: For those that don't know it the mileage ratings for just about ALL cars will drop in 2008. The hybrids get hammered especially. Why? Because the EPA has decided to use "real world" driving with air conditioning, varied speeds, etc. You can read about it here:

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/ratings2008.shtml

So if you plug in the old mileage ratings for the 2005 Viper (12/21 on my window sticker) you will find that in 2008 it would be rated at a more realistic 11/19. Click here to see for yourself.

But the actual 2008 Viper? It is now rated, under the new ratings system, at 13/22! So for you guys and gals that buy the Viper for its great fuel economy (;)), you will now enjoy an increase in gas mileage while blasting past those Z06's... :D

Interesting, per that link, the Gen2s had basically the same mileage as Gen3s, previously rated at 12/21 (is that the stickered #?), but now 11/20...so how does that explain multiple times in which I got 23+MPG?

Yeah, when even Consumer Reports (with evident bias in favor of environmental matters) had been reporting that hybrids got nowhere near their published numbers in reality, it was clearly time for a change in the ratings system.

Per the comparison link, the Prius goes from 55 combined MPG before to 46! That's a big drop!

The real numbers really alter the calculation in the value of buying a hybrid, balancing the higher front-end price versus the ACTUAL fuel cost savings.

Saving money is always good news. Especially when the savings is not going to the government.

Not to get off topic but I wish there was a Sportscar designation that was omitted from CAFE like SUVs falling under the Truck catagory.
