Mods: Intake, Ported Heads, Rockers, Lifters...and the following:

1-3/4" B&B headers into 3" exhaust with the Random Tech X-pipe, car only has the Dynomax Bullet muffler in each side and no cats.

At idle it sounds awesome...but almost can't stand to get on it its so loud. And the drone is pretty damn bad.

When I had the stock exhaust I ran with just the resonators, no cats or rear muffler and loved it! How can I get the sound to come back down but still sound deep?

Sounds clips would help a lot.

Thanks,
Steve

you could double-up the dynomax, get the moroso spiral flows (i use those... 1tony1 recommended and they helped a lot w/ the noise) or add some hi-flo cats. the moroso bullet mufflers are quite nice. $50 ea and a nice fit.

No emissions here in SC...so don't really want to go with cats...unless I have to. Would I want to keep the Dynomax and add the Morosos or dump the Dynomax all together? Any sound clips?

You need cats! I had the same prob, mine sounded like an Indy car without them. Get a pair of high flow, It'll sound great.

Straight thru Dynomax's flow a minimum of 1100cfm I believe.

Bullet mufflers aren't going to do much muffling. Put the fattest case muffler you can under the sill or in the back. I think you can fit 6"OD of larger mufflers under the sill where the resonators were.

Another one hits the wall. Good for you for having enough hearing left to even notice. Wise of you to do something about it.

Street car? Track car?

You are essentially [email protected] have done a great job of unlocking the power of your rig and it wants breath..hard. The answer may be exactly what Vipera recommends, but with high flows dont expect too much relief, they are twice as loud as stock cats. Definatley go with ceramic substrate as the cell configuration is tighter than the metal subs and as such will "blend" the sound slightly. Will they last as long? I've heard from yes, absolutely (Corsa test car, same cerams for years) to...no, they won't and you will replace them every three years. Street car no issue, track car..God knows.

Until then, use these. You will hear everything you need to (engine, tranny) and not hear the rest. They are EXCELLENT and once you start you won't jam without them.

Mines not 'that' loud, but damn the drone! Oooo the drone. I have the B&B's into 14" Dynomax ultaflow bullets, then the RandomTech's cat back. Gonna try some different things and see IF I can calm it down, before tossing in the towel and gettin another exhaust system.

Don't have a sound clip, but we found the Corsa exhaust and flow-thru cats sound AWEsome, and not overpowering, and little drone. Everybody does something different with their cars, and the sound is different/acceptable to different folks as well....some even prefer to leave the stock exhaust on due to loudness, but hey, Vipers SHOULD sound awesome when leaving people in the dust, ey???!!! ~juli~

Here's my saga with my 2001 w/Corsa. Started with just the cat-back. Then couldn't leave well enough alone and went cat-less...TOO LOUD and the DRONE..!! Then installed 14" bullets where the cats were. Sound OK but he DRONE (1800-2500RPM) was killing me. Took the bullets out and went Hi-flow cats. PERFECT !! Go with the hi-flow cats and leave everything else the same. For whatever reason, a little resitiction (cats) in the 1800-2500 RPM range takes the drone away. Other than that, still screams at WOT.

I think I will try the Morosos first.

Tony,

Would just the spiral flows do the trick in place of the bullets or would I need to run both?

I used the R/T high flow cats with the corsa cat back system and I like it a lot. There is something about having the high flow cats that knocks down the drone. You can see right through them so they're not very restrictive at all. Idle sounds healthy, and WOT is a V10 treat!!!!:2tu:

Why not put the resonators (with 2 1/2" to 3" adapters) back on and see how you like it? If that doesn't work, adding hi flow cats should help.

I'm glad I'm not alone on this journey. I installed Borla Headers, B&B cats and B&B catback. Sounded OK but the drone was just unbearable. After screwining around with Vortex cones, bullets, etc. I ended up ditching the whole exhaust and whent with Belanger headers, RT ceramic cats and Belanger catback. No drone. Awesome sound. Going on the advice of JonB I went with RT ceramic cats for a mellow exhaust note. Still plenty loud but very pleasant. I would try the RT cats as they flow great and I think they would compliment your exhaust system.

Tony,

My car had HMS exhaust which consisted of 3" pipes, a Dynomax Ultraflow (can type) and HMS version of high flow cats = a stock cat cut in half.......not really a bad idea. I had the bright idea of removing the 1/2 stock cats. When I did, it got to loud and started to drone especially at highway speeds. I added the Spiral Flows and it quieted it back down real close to the level that it was at and the drone was gone. One day I am going to flow check those cats against the Spirals and also against high flow cats to see what flow difference there was.
I was so pissed about the sound after the cat delete that I bought a decibel meter before I made anymore changes. That's how serious I was. I know someone that may have just added them to their car, I will ask if they did and get the results

So to answer your question, definitely leave the other mufflers.

I have the TNT 3" cat back.
  • Belanger headers
  • RT Metal Sub Cats
  • Dumped the TNT POS mufflers and replaced with Borla mufflers in sills to reduce loudness, I didn't think the tnt mufflers did much as they were packed with fiberglass
  • Added Moroso Spiral drag mufflers on the straight run just behind the diff.2, one on each side
  • Finally the sound got reasonable, still some drone, but it sounded like an offshore racer in the beginning.
  • Tried to go without cats, forget it, the smell was killer.

Why are you against cats? They will get rid of the drone, lightweight, and they help the environment at the same time. We aren't talking about the 70's garbage cats that killed performance.

lol

Right now the bullets are where the stock cats were and straight pipes back...so its easier to put the Spiral Flows their place and if that doesn't do the trick then they will move back a little and I'll put HF cats in as well.

But nobody has any video/sound of these setups?

I had Moroso Spiral Bullets in place of cats at one point, the loudness wasn't so much the issue as the smell of raw hydrocarbons. Besides, I figure, you have this expensive car and people are driving behind you and it smells like a 60's muscle car polluting the heck out of the environment. If it wouldn't have smelled so darn strong I may never have changed the way I had it.

I've tried so many different configurations the only thing original from TNT are the 3" sections and the tips. It's been cut up and had mufflers installed, moved, installed in another spot, changed, you name it!

Good luck.

That's surprising. My GTS has B&B 1 5/8", is catless with the Corsa and I have no drone. :dunno: It's loud at idle on initial startup, but once it settles into a warm idle, it's not too bad IMO...and that '98 cam sounds great.
In fact, I actually enjoy driving the car on the highway.

Okaaaaaaaaaay, I broke down and are getting some hi-flow cats!

Now.. I have O2 Sims in the back...should those stay or should I plug the sensors back up?

agreed. I did the no-cat thing for about 5 miles (no kidding). Ordered Ceramic Random Tech Hi-Flows, and installed the following weekend.. My car sounded sick (in a bad way) without CATS... Not for me.. The Random Techs combined with the Corsa, give the car an awesome sound.
