I reached for 5th gear one day and it just wasn't there. Come to find out there are others in the club just like me who have also experienced this break down. The way my luck has been running of late I just knew that DC would turn down this warranty claim.

Boy was I wrong ! Admittedly, they did have my tech, J.D. Farmer of Marietta (GA) Dodge break open the tranny to have an independent inspector inspect it, but immediately upon inspection, they covered it and replaced my entire tranny. I looked at my old tranny and most of the teeth from fifth gear were lying in the bottom of the housing that encases it.

I don't recall ever missing a shift to fifth badly. Perhaps on ocassion I may have tried to throw it over too far and had the reverse lock-out thingy prevent me from doing so, but darned rarely.

My tech thinks that 5th and 6th are just not stong enough on the stock tranny to handle the high rev, high load conditions of ocassional track days and/or aggressive driving. Who knows, but I am told they changed the design on the 2003 to have only one countershaft. Whether that will have any effect on this recurrent problem I have no clue, but I go to sleep tonight one happier camper. Now if only I could afford some of those StopTech brakes and/or one of those new superchargers !

FYI: Get the extended warranty if you can !!!

$5,179, plus tax, at the dealer. To repair my car they removed the tranny and put a new one in its place.

I really love the way Dodge seems to take care of Viper people. I guess they charge so much for the cars to start with so they can afford to do a few "borderline" warranty claims. Makes me happy.

To put things in the proper prospective. I just purchsed a spare trans. While I was looking I could have bought a new trans for $2,300. I believe it still may be available, look on Ebay and this board. To remove and replace the tansmission cannot be more than a four hour flat rate.

Another direction, John Dinoto (248-232-1110) probably repairs more T56 transmissions than any other single individual. Many dealers use John without the owners even knowing who repaired the trans. I just had John repair and enhance a transmission. You would be surprised what the real cost of repair is.

$2300 is ALMOST 2 times as much as an extended warranty.

MichaelP:

Calm down and listen, I'll try this a little bit slower - The point was not the extended warranty. The obvious point is many people do not have an extended warranty. The second obvious point was the charges some dealers (not only viper dealers) fabricate.

Any others have a 5th or 6th gear go out? It appears that my 6th gear went out this weekend after some "spirited" driving, though the tranny seems to have been a bit "weird" in the last few weeks.
