Looking at a 2000 GTS with 16k miles for 50K.

I plan to drive the car only about 3-4 miles a year...

How much more will the car drop in resale every year?

I would say 1K to 2k with the car leveling off around 45-47K if I keep the miles low over the years.

your best guess or thoughts other than "just drive it and be happy"?

Just to be safe, I would estimate that the car would level-off in the low 40's or even high 30's. At some point, there will be little distinction between a '96 GTS and an '00 GTS. You can see this happening with '93 RT/10s - '96 RT/10s already. Also, look at the value of Deloreans. The value of all of these cars seem to be in the upper teens or low 20's regardless of years. In any event, try not to think of re-sale value as much as the performance you are buying. The fun these cars offer will greatly off-set the inevitable decline in value. Good luck with your purchase.

<FONT COLOR="Black">Toby - The car market is one that is difficult to predict. The hope is that you don't take it in the shorts too bad, but you never know. The reality is that the price of the thing only matters twice, the day you buy it and the day you sell it. All of the prices in between just affect your mood if you let it. If the Viper prices dip too low and that bums you out, shove another tank of gas in it and you will quickly forget about that!

It is tough to mentally put such a huge amount into your entertainment and self-indulgence bucket. If it fell by half in value in 10 years could you deal with that? Two years?

Here's how I got over this (I am a noted tightwad). A few years ago I had a co-worker that survived a round with an "incurable cancer". After months of experimental treatment and all of that she came back to work. We had lunch the first week she was back.

She told me that at one level she was grateful for the experience. "Huh?", I offered intellectually. She said, "I learned something important. I learned that this is not a dress rehearsal. I have lived my life like it is a dress rehearsal and it isn't."

Those words hit me hard. Try to balance those thoughts with the need to secure the future. The question to ask yourself is, "if not now, then when?"

Buy the right car for you, the one you want. Enjoy it. Your kids will love it too. Mine sure do.

Thanks for the kind words.

I am a major tight *** myself and a firm believer of it's not what you make but what you do with what you have.

I know what you are talking about first hand with your story.

I had a nasty run in with skin cancer last year and just this week the Dr. found more and I am waiting to see the results from the tests. I should be ok though. They are catching it early.

TobyT - You need to buy the car before it gets away from you. It has already taken its 25%+ depreciation hit and the depreciation rate will slow down from this point. Enjoy life and get that Viper.
