Since when is "Did ____ just happen?" considered news? Jalopnik ***** ass

It doesn't appear to be the official time, but it does seem that is the time that McLaren wants to hit on the 'Ring.

Oops! I'm sure it will be fast, I'd be blown away if it actually hit that speed, but wait to publish the damn article until it actually happens!

In other news, did North Korea just nuke California?

Once again completely blurring the definition of what constitutes a "production" car.

Viper ACR still holds the valid record according to BTG.
The Radical does not apply.

http://bridgetogantry.com/2/index.php/home/nurburgring-laptimes/178-fastest-lap-of-the-ring

Car__Laptime__Video Link_Valid?___BTG says:

Pagoni Zonda-R 6m47.5s YES No No, it's seriously awesome, but it's not a road car. Crap, it's not even legal for GT racing!

Radical SR8LM 6m48s YES No Road-legal in Britain and a LOT of other countries, but not everywhere - notably the USA and Germany. Hero Michael Vergers drove it on street-legal semi-slicks wearing jeans and a Polo shirt. He da man.

Ferrari 599XX 6m58.1s YES No Not road-legal, not even available to buy! 'A rolling laboratory' is Ferrari's own description of this car! And it was on slicks. Cheating Italians... ;)

Gumpert Apollo 7m11.5s YES No Bonkers Audi-motored Apollo is a bespoke supercar only available as built-to-order. It's not strictly type-approved like the GT2.RS and other machines, but it is road-legal in Germany - which counts for a lot, but not enough.

Dodge Viper ACR 7m12.1s YES Yes Record reclaimed in Sept 2011. Special version of the SRT-10 includes real aerodynamic aids and lightweight components, not to mention semi-slicks and racing brakes. Factory built and showroom spec - when the laptime was achieved, the suspension settings were then used on the production cars.

Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition 7m14.6s YES Yes New record blows us away - set on stock RE070s Bridgestones by Akira Iido

Donkervoort D8 270 RS 7m14.9s YES No Donker-whut? Lotus 7-type car with big turbo power. Known in Germany and Holland, but nowhere else. Not exactly mass-produced either.

Porsche GT2RS 7m18s No No No video yet, but otherwise sounds plausible! A showroom car that will be road-legal everywhere. Only the lack of video could deny this car its glory.

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 7m19s YES Yes Previously clocked at 7m26s, Pilot Sport Cups and lots of practice now put the ZR1 at the top

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 7m22.7s YES Yes Updated 2012 model benefits from lots of small changes and one BIG change; Michelin Pilot Sport Cup semi-slicks

Nissan GTR 7m24.2s YES Yes The car whose bold, BOLD claims put the 'Ring back on the radar in 2007. Now the 2012 model has knocked a few seconds off again...

Maserati MC12 7m24.3 YES Yes Conducted by the Black Falcon race team, this 'Battle Royale' was done in one day and the MC12 won. It wasn't the ideal day either, and Marc Besseng only spent a couple of laps in each car. Shocks were failing, the rain was getting closer. There would be more to come from all these machines if half as much time was spent as on the Viper or GTR....

Pagoni Zonda F 7m24.7 YES Yes

Ferrari Enzo 7m25.3 YES Yes

Porsche Carrera GT 7m28s YES Yes Another Black Falcon effort, Walter Röhrl also did a 7m29s in this car.

903 hp with adjustable aero (almost ACR downforce when needed) and light weight, I can believe the number.

Don't forget the super sophisticated traction control and torque vectoring diffs will make this new class of car incredibly fast. Probably the next phase of super performance will put in the programming for the specific track so things like overboosting the turbos and when and how much electric motor assist to apply will be 'given' out as advice.

I read on another site that its Mclaren's goal for the Ring. Wow. These guys don't play around and if they are even thinking about that number as a goal that's one team I think can achieve it. A time like that will last a long time. Everyone will be runner up to this bad boy.

I don't believe that. How close is that to actual prototype cars? High 6:40s is much more believable.

UPDATE: McLaren just replied with the following statement about the above slide:p

The image in question was included on a slide which was part of a mood board to inspire the design team for the McLaren P1™, and not the engineers, who are working to a target time of ‘merely’ sub-7 minutes.P

What a joke, why don't they write the article AFTER the car does it

All manufacturers have simulation programs (including SRT) that will tell them what their vehicle should run at the Ring. A 6:33 really does sound a little too fast on street or R-compound tires, but I'm guessing McLaren knows what the car will run within 10 seconds of the actual time and never even leave the UK.

If the new P1 does it in the 6:45 range first time out, that would be impressive.....anything faster than that, yikes :omg::omg:

If it doesn't beat the Viper time, Ron Dennis will probably go to jail for killing the engineers. :lmao:

Cheers,
George

Yep, that is what I'm reading as well. The 6.33 photo was part of a mood board that the team had when designing the car and somehow leaked out. They are shooting for a sub 7 minute lap, which I imagine they will get.

Unless somebody buys the Nürburgring this summer, it could very well fall into such a state of disrepair that nobody will top the lap record.

Mac keeps talking about specific track programming.

IE GPS based active aero/suspension/power

That would be a fantastic feature since you can dial in roll stiffness, brake dive, aero percentages, etc based on each corner. We make all sorts of vehicle changes now (spring rates, shock settings, anti roll bar size, and so on) but we have to live with it for the entire track. Many race cars have brake bias adjustability and anti roll bar adjustability from the cockpit. Surely we're not saying those pro drivers are less talented, are we?

Here is the reality, the faster you can make the car get through corners, the better driver you have to be since you have that much less time to make your next decision for next apex, braking point, etc. You have so little room for error because the car is so fast that you have to be spot on. I'm pretty sure the feature on the McLaren can be turned off if the driver did not want to use it.

Any car with a GPS and adjustable shocks (like the Vettes magnetic ride shocks) would be so easy to program to allow different handling parameters for each corner. Either the driver can program the track handling to his liking or use a canned program that the manufacturer designs based on a race drivers input. Formula One cars had this feature around 1993 when hydraulic suspensions were the rage. Unfortunately it has been banned to save money....in F1 that really is an oxymoron.

Cheers,
George
