It was a question that I just thought about. I was in my buddies Mustang and when he downshifted he showed me his rev limiter in action. It just pu the car at a DEAD hault at 6700 RPM's. Do our cars have something like that to prevent us from blowing the trans? I always thought that they didn't but I just wanted to check with a few members.

Thanks

Keith

Vipers have rev limiters like every car built in the past few decades.

It is set to 6100rpm, and will mainly protect your engine from over reving. Although your trans may be hurt from too much rpm also, but will take much more than viper motor.

But you should already know this, I had my rev limiter being tested with 15 miles on the odometer. Now get out there and find out for yourself.

Yep, they do. One thing the tuners do to make their cars perform better for mag tests is either up the rev limit or remove it entirely..... since most quality tuner engines have pecision balanced rotating assemblies and have stouter rockers and springs, this is usually not a problem.

Whoa - there's an easier way to show off the rev limiter than having to down shift first! :)

(I'm assuming he did this at moderate speeds...and just lit it tap against...)

If you downshift, and the car pulls the engine up to a higher speed, the rev limiter will not protect the engine from over rev.

cuts off fuel, and like others have said, rev limiters on all cars dont work for downshifts :p

Yeah, understand that. Fuel cut offs **** IMO due to the fact car runs lean during the transistion. Not so good for racing with power adders.

The fuel is shutoff to protect the catalysts. An ignition cutoff is much easier to control but pumping a bunch of raw fuel into the cats at hi revs will melt the melt them.

Do We Have Gear Lock Ups?

On the Viper's do we have the part the locks up the certain gears when we are going a certain speed? Say I am in 5th and going 80 can I still shift into 1st or will 1st be locked and not allow me to do it?

Thanks

Re: Do We Have Gear Lock Ups?

The synchros will make it very hard to shift into a very low gear for the speed you are going.
You might be able to force the lever into 1st from 5th at 80mph. It wouldn't be something you would do by accident.
That's what I think.

Re: Do We Have Gear Lock Ups?

Ive done 2nd @ 100 actually guys, I put a post up just a bit ago about this. OVerrevved the engine, but by the time the clutch fully engage, I probably lost a few mph (revs). Wheels chirped, I dont think they fully caught up the speed, and I dropped the clutch quick. No problems afterwards.

Re: Do We Have Gear Lock Ups?

Speaking of over-reving during a downshift... years ago my friend was drag racing his mustang against another mustang (I was a passenger).. well, at the end of the race we were in 3rd gear and all the way in the red (doing about 105 or so)... when my friend goes to downshift into 4th and he accidentally shifts into 2nd!

Needless to say the tach wrapped all the way around.. I was certain he did major damage to the car. Within a second he had the clutch pressed back in and shifted correctly... wow.

Spectators said there was black smoke pouring out of the tail pipes and white smoke coming from the tires!

Tough car, no damage that we knew of, and we won the race.

Re: Do We Have Gear Lock Ups?

I just recently put it into first from 2nd but I was at full RPM - doing around 80 - 90MPH. I was aiming for third. Thought I broke the car but all turned out well. Lucky for me I didn't crash but I could have lost control really easily, especially because I panicked.

It is always in the back of my head now that I could shift into 1st at speeds I shouldn't and keeps me scared a bit. I bought a new shifter and don't have problems finding the gears now.

Re: Do We Have Gear Lock Ups?

I've shifted my car from 3rd to 2nd at speeds several times ( I'm embarrassed to say ), terrible creaming noise from the engine and my car still runs great. These cars are built incredibly well.

and don't try this at home kids
