I know they did not start in Camaros until 1999. I don't think that Gen 2 Vipers have them. Could be wrong, but I feel fine about my Gen 2 not having one.

Remember we just got ABS in 2001!

How do you KNOW that it's in post-96 cars?

I saw something on TV just the other day where some guy had the data used against him in court, it had recorded him in excess of 100mph, and he got screwed!

Its part of the OBDII emissions control system which was required on all production vehicles starting in 1996. Both my Z28 and Impala had it. The system itself is fairly beign because its purpose has nothing to do with driving, cops on the other hand have a different view.

As for as the trial I have no clue. I *try* to keep track of litigation regarding the use of emission control devices in law enforcement but haven't seen anything new since the NJ thing. Wouldn't surpize me though. The problem I have is how did they nab the guy? - best possible recording time is only like 10-15 seconds and if he had let the car idle for that time the data would have been erased - unless it was another form of tracking (Like Onstar or GPS or even LoJack.)

Scary worl out there these days...
