Do you get asked "How much did you pay?"

I seem to get this question quite a bit. In my area Vipers are not at all common. Not that they are to begin with, but I would go years without seeing one. I understand the draw, the curiosity etc but I am really surprised how often complete strangers ask what I paid for the car. I almost always smile, shake my head and say they are not cheap. It happened again today. I am always polite but I don't ever think I could ask some stranger what he paid for his car.

If it is another car guy I tell them as they may be trying to get a feel for the market. Anybody else I say too much which is probably true. That said it is worth every penny.

Just about every car show I enter, I get asked. I always start of politely, "it is used and an '03'....got her around 1/2 price...got a great deal........that is unfortunately and most of the time --NOT enough information.

So I just go ahead and tell them the sticker price back in '03 to end the saga. Never really understood why people ask. I've never asked anyone from a Yugo to a Ferrari what they paid....seems 'personal business' to me. (Also, seems if you really want to know, you'd just google it, as opposed to asking the owner out in public.)

At shows, I always seem to be escorted to park right next to corvettes. Imagine that..... Yesterday in fact next to a '13 Corvette Z06 Convertible...oh sorry ("427" Convertible as apparently same engine, but not a Z06.......Brand new. Nice guy sitting who sat right next to me....no one asked him while we sat there......Go figure.

Maybe it was that one attendee who told me 'nice vette you own there'--Ouch LOL!

Every time I take the car out and every time it just catches me so off guard. I hate it. It really is a personal question. Just like asking someone what their annual income is. I guess some people were never taught that growing up :/

I usually just give a range when people ask. I tell them something like "you can find them around $35-40k for one like mine with similar miles. They're all over the map on price with mileage, year, mods, etc. On the one hand I don't want to cheapen the car, but on the other I don't want them to think they are unattainable to a regular guy.

I've been asked a few times too. Most I get asked if they can take a pic, which is funny because they could if I said no, lol, when it's a teen I usually tell them sure but put em in the car and I take the pic.

I get asked how much my GT500 was all the time, it's like how people say hi to me when I drive it. I don't know why, thought it was weird but now I'm used to it I guess. I mean it's a mustang for Pete's sake.

Always been an uncomfortable question for me too. I always ask them back, what do you think it would sell for?, then change the subject.

Or I smile and say, not sure what it is worth now, but it came with a payment book this (show finger and thumb about 1" apart) thick.

When I was raised, it was considered rude to ask how much somebody paid, but now...not so much.

Constantly.

I think that considering we are not talking 2009 sedan here, it is an expected, and legitimate question. It’s the price you pay for being successful. We work hard, buy the car of our dreams, and should expect the average Joe (like we were) to be curious about the price, and many more questions they ask about this mysterious car.
Heck, I never have been embarrassed for being successful. Why snub someone, especially young folk. I always ask them if they like it, and when they say they do, I assure them that they could own one someday.
If that question really bothers you, you should take your Viper home, put it in the garage, and hide it. - LOL
Many years ago, the first person I asked what a car cost was a salesman at the local Chevy dealership. He said son, I’m going to tell you two things. First, that brand new Corvette cost $5,000. And secondly, you will never, ever own a Corvette.
When I bought my sixth one, I wondered if I should look that **** up and either smack him, or thank him.

Now I get asked "Is that a new one?" -I'm sure in reference to the gen V, because of the media hype. Then I have to be all sad, and say, "no, it's an 06".

If someone pushes the issue I tell them what it would have been new and that I bought mine used so not nearly that much.

Depending on who is asking it can feel like an embarrassing and judgmental question... Like there is an assumption that younger people with expensive looking cars either got the car as a gift from a rich parent or they're piling on irresponsible amounts of debt. Sometimes telling them I don't have wife/ kids gets the "aahhhhh that's why" reaction haha

I've had this question asked quite a few times since I got my Viper, but far more often (and FAR TOO often) I get asked, "So how fast have you gotten it?" Personally, that question annoys me a lot because literally everyone who isn't a car person asks it, and it just shows how little people understand these cars, or other exotics for that matter. It's almost as if people assume that if you own a Viper, you are racing around the highways like an absolute maniac at 200+ mph.....

How much did it cost?
What does the speedometer go up to?
How fast have you driven it?
Do you get alot of tickets?
What do you do for a living?
What color is that?
Is that a Lotus?

I'm a nice guy and I'm rigorously honest, so I always give polite, truthful answers.

I don't consider myself to be a Viper ambassador by any means, but it is important to me that everybody walks away thinking "That Viper owner was a really cool, funny, laid back guy. Sure was nice of him to take time to chat, let me take pics, take me for a ride, etc."

the strangers I smile and will never tell them the price my answer always : reasonable price unless he wants to buy it LOL

I generally tell people how much I bought it for when they ask. I don't really care. Its pretty much common knowledge, if you just research a bit you can figure out about how much someone paid for pretty much anything.

I like the idea of the clever response you guys are listing. I get asked this a lot, I've always attributed it to being young (25 now, 24 when I got it).

I like this. Unfortunately my knee-**** reaction is quite the opposite, though I try to stay polite.
