Driving impressions in my DLM Level IV

How can I describe this car? It is so far beyond anything I have ever driven that comparisons seem ludicrous. I used to own a modified Yamaha YZF-R1 1000cc sportbike; compared to my DLM car, that bike was slow. Perhaps a narrative will best suit the purpose of this post:

I start up the RT, and the first and overwhelming impression is that I am in a civilized pro-mod dragster. The engine fires with a roar, then quickly settles into a lopey idle like that of a fast powerboat. The supercharger is almost silent at idle, with just the hiss of escaping air from the bypass valve to remind the driver that this is no ordinary V10. Around town, the RT drives like any big-cammed Viper: slightly cold blooded, unwilling to accept large doses of throttle delivered ham-****** at low RPMs, a machine clearly able to accomplish the task of low-speed transportation but not particularly optimized for doing so. The hiss from the bypass becomes noticeable above 2000 RPMs in 1st and 2nd, before wind noise drowns it out, and nearby motorists stare in alarm at the hissing snake which has just slithered by them. At crusing RPMs the RT is civilized, with the Corsa and the high-flow cats keeping the noise at quite tolerable levels.

When speeds rise above the 10-25 mph of city traffic, the DLM car comes into its own. The power is stupendous, overwhelming, anywhere above 2500 RPM. Even with 3.07 gears and larger-than-stock 345/30-19s, first gear is simply an excuse to lay long black stripes on the road through 60 mph. Second gear is no better -- anything above half-throttle and both tires evaporate into clouds of smoke. On a good road, third gear will finally provide traction until around 100 MPH, when the boost gauge climbs to its 15 PSI peak and the rear end begins to wag as both tires slip. Not until 4th gear is the beast's full power reliably usable; the engine roars and the speedometer climbs from 90 to 140 like a stocker running from 0 to 50.

So how fast is it? On a cold (50F) morning recently, both rear tires spun in 4th, at 120 MPH, as the blower came on boost. The thrust available in the powerband of 4000-6000 RPM is unreal. The first time I kept the pedal pinned in 3rd from 60 to 100 I just slowed back down and laughed -- nervously -- for a good 20 seconds. Although I played down my initial impressions of the car with Doug, the truth is that for the first week it was back my palms would sweat and my heart would race every time I started it up. I'm no longer afraid of it, exactly, but it's a vehicle which deserves and requires respect from the driver.

Now I need to work up the courage to try it with the NOS turned on...

Question?:

OK, hopefully tomorrow Doug is going to dyno my Level 3+ (I didn't opt for Nitros). If Dr. Roof has 910 hp and Treynor has 996 hp, which are either side of a Level 3+, what will I get? Any bets? Doug?...

To be precise, I believe David's car made 790 RWHP without cats. My car hasn't yet been dyno'd with the cats installed, but now that they're on it probably makes 820 +/- 20 without N2O. However, ours are both Gen-II cars; Gen-Is seem to run weaker at the same boost level.

For your car, I'll fearlessly guess 775 +/- 25 RWHP if the temp is cool in the dyno room, subtract 15 HP if you're using high-flow cats and 25 if you're using stockers. But that's just a guess

. I actually drive like a little old lady on the road, and make up for it on the track (sorry, non Viper on the track). I'm just happy to be entering the DLM family at this point...

ElDiablo, I fully expect to put my car into the 9's. However, ET is about traction and launch, not so much HP. The 152 mph trap speed, however, is telling

Executron -- frankly, I can't imagine driving a gen-I car (with gen-I suspension and brakes) with anything approaching this horsepower level. Hell, my ABS-equipped '01 is a handful! That said, I'm sure Doug'll extract everything there is to be had from your package -- I just hope you're careful when and where you use it!

I actually have Stop•Tech brakes and I'm having custom suspension designed as I type. In reality I'll just putt-around town in it. The girlfriend hates it, the dog barks when I start it, etc... I have other things for the drag strip and track, and I always turn off ABS on the track anyway. I'm only getting a DLM engine to rib a friend of mine who hates Dodge, and for shows and stuff...

I have a difficult time understanding why all of you folks with these outrageous DLM & Heffner engines don't immediately switch your rearend assemblies, and upgrade your trannies. Can anyone explain why? The OE tranny and diff are only good for a maximum of 200 launches before they self-destruct, and can't take much more over 600 HP.

From what I have seen on your strip times, you really need this or a solid rearend set up. JMO.

Thank for the write-up Ben.

One of these days (when the rain stops) I'd love a ride in your DLM beast. But of course that will set an unreal point of reference for fast, and I know that I'll have to mod my car afterwards to make it not feel so (relatively) slow.

That looks like a Halibrand quick change rear end to me. There may be similar designs now. It is made to take large (not sure how large) torque loads and allow for the gear ratio to be changed in about 20 minutes. Down side is that I don't think it really has much in the way of spider gears to allow the tires to turn at different speeds while cornering.

Also, this is not a "solid axle Dana rear end" it may or may not be a 4-link depending on how it is mounted in car, though I a 4 link independent suspension design would be odd. A solid axle is just that. It is what comes under the rear end of 1 ton Dodge trucks. They also used to put them under 4 spd and some automatic Hemi cars back in '60s. We have Dana rear ends under our Vipers now, but they are based on Dana 44 centers. The Hemi cars and heavy trucks used Dana 60 centers, which are heavier duty. A solid axle with a proper set up may improve drag racing times, but would likely make car handle significantly worse for fast twisty road driving or road couses. The solid axle adds significantly more unsprung weight and does not allow the wheels to move independently over bumps, which is especially a problem while cornering.

Does the LPE Vette[8.9et] have the stock rear end??? Just curious......I know the Vette is making less power and much less torque than Treynors Viper.

Is there a compromise rear end setup that would be good for both 1/4 miling and circuit track? Id love to see the numbers a Viper like Treynors would do with a drag setup but Id hate to give up what the Viper is also known for..Handling......What can I say Im a greedy ******* ..I want it all.........Id be happy with a "mere 460hp Viper"....

Not that I'm qualified to make DLM power predictions, I'm going to bid higher than treynor and predict 825-875.

Some of that HP comes from the sheer color of the motor. No car that looks like that could possibly be SLOW.

Anyone else want to make some guesses? In fact, we could do a pool on who gets closest to the number. I got $5 on 875 rwhp!

You are right, and you get the cigar! Ed has them set up for Vipers and they go for about $15k.

I'm going to try a set of BFG's on my car. I don't have problem with the wheelspin in 4th but I want better traction in 1-3rd gear. I wouldn't mind having your problem Ben
