Well I've had a small exhaust leak for a month or so. But yesterday while tearing up a M5 on the juice the leak got really loud. I thought maybe a bolt came loose (which they did). So I took off the side sill and my metal gaskets have MELTED. I got them from Jegs "Seal-4-Good"

collector gaskets made from solid "dead soft" aluminum. Anyone ever heard of this? Just wondering if this was normal. Also the collector gasket was drooping 1/2" down into the exhaust pipe, possibly costing some HP. Anyone know how much hotter (if any) nitrous exhaust gas is? I would never thought this would happen.

Here is a pic. The top left was on the header collector and the one next to it was at a joint half way down the side sill. They originally looked like the new gasket on the bottom.

Mike,

I have not noticed EGT on nitrous to be any higher than without. Of course, it depends somewhat on your mixture. Remember that nitrous is very cold and lowers cylinder temperature over naturally aspirated combustion(again...with correct mixture of a/f/n)

In looking at your pics I have the following thoughts and suggestions.

It looks like the gaskets may have been overtightened which would be easy to do because of their soft aluminum construction. Also, if they are not the original gaskets, it is possible that the flanges could have been warped from overtightening typical paper type gaskets. My views are based upon the burn marks and the way that the mounting holes are spread open.

I suggest you check the flanges for straightness. If they are not perfectly flat, you will always end up with a leak. Try using Fel-Pro flange gaskets with the metal mesh. I have never had one of those fail.

Also, after checking the flanges for straightness and installing new gaskets, run the car up to operating temp a few times then retighten the flange bolts again.
