first oil change

hi, '14 TA with 500 miles... any info on oil change at home ? i got the oem filter coming..., got 10 qts of M1 0-40 from walmart.... got an extra quart....

anything i need to watch for on doing my own oil change ? does it take full 11qt or 10.5 ?

also, should i wait 'til 1000. to do the first change ? 500 prob. a bit too early.... then i figure i'd do every 5K if i'm not tracking it and o/w weekend driving it... ?!?

Actually we recommend changing at 500 miles , to essentially flush out the system. You do need to get another quart and Dodge is definitely recommending the new Shell/Pennzoil Platinum Ultra Synthetic , though the Mobil 1 is fine. The Shell/Pennzoil is the new synthetic formulated from natural gas and the Engineers we know at Dodge/SRT are super high on it. Shell/Pennzoil actually got with Dodge/SRT and did a 0-40 specifically just for our Viper. I have used Mobil 1 for 20+ years , but after reading about the new Ultra Platinum and chatting with the guys in Detroit, I and we ( Woodhouse) have switched over.

Keep in mind not knocking Mobil 1, just convinced this stuff is really fantastic and superior to others on the market --plus pretty cool a company worked with Corporate to formulate an oil viscosity for the Snake.

Mine will not take more than 10.5. A little low is ok, a little high is a no.

I am also a firm believer in performing the first oil change at 500 miles. I did it on my TA this summer and the procedure was no different than my Gen IV. Performing the service on a four post lift makes the job a lot easier.
Mine took the full 11 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-40. I used a Mopar 05038041AA filter. (prefilled with oil before install) It takes a good 20-30 minutes for all the old oil to drain out, so don't be in a hurry. You need a 13mm wrench for the drain plug and tighten it to 20 ft lbs. Hope this helps.

Bill can i switch to this oil on my gen2? it has 37k miles now, is it going to screw things up or just continue mobil1 as i have always been doing?

oh ok guys... so, my intent to do change at first 500 miles is not too conservative then... alright, will do it.

will check on the mopar filter part #...ordered it off somewhere...ebay maybe...said it was for viper...

where can i get the penzoil in 5qt containers ? i don't think walmart had those...

as to the change, there is no plates under the car i have to drop ?

i'll probably ask Dan C. to do it while I have the car there for Corsa installation in a week or two...

is it true that after certain miles, the idle speed drops ?

and there is no oil changes/service reminder to reset or anything ?

No real reason to change on your older Viper, though it would not hurt, Dennis.

Don't bother with ebay, just go to your local Dodge Dealer or better yet ask Dan Cragin if he has one in stock ( bet he does). Part number is MO-041 ( shortened ) or the full number is 1-05038041AA. I would let Dan C. do all the work, since even though he is not at a Dodge Franchise, he is still one of the very best Viper Techs in the entire US of A!!!

The idle speed will drop shortly after the 500mi mark; I think 700 is when mine came down.

FYI, Dodge Dealers (some or all) have SMOKING DEALS on oil and filter packages (Pennzoil Ultra synthetic or whatever is the top level PZ synthetic oil). I just took my 875mi. car in today and was about to pay the negotiated $105 for oil and filter when my Service Advisor offered the package. I purchased 6 oil + filter changes for $345 over 3 years. You can even purchase more for less. This is cheaper than I can purchase the oil and filter... . You also pick the intervals as long as they are within the end period (3 years in my case) and the service is nationwide at any Dodge Dealer!

Wow...really ? That's not bad... will ask around my area..IE of so.cal.... sometimes I would rather do it myself at home cause it takes too much time.hassel to take it to a dealer...

Just did my first oil & filter change on my 2013 gts with 1307 miles. All went well it took about 30 minutes to do a complete drain and I actually had the car slightly lower on the left side to insure a complete drain. The only thing I didn't have was a new rubber washer for the drain plug, I reused the original one but will replace at next change.
