The first mod done to my SRT comes when you open the hood and remove the air baffle with a #2 Phillips. There are 2 self-tapping screws that hold this piece and it only takes seconds. Now when the hood is down, the air cleaners are in view.
Don't know this is a bad thing though. I can definately hear a different in breathing. Does anyone know what K/N Filter will fit this replacement?

Ivan;

Mine just arrived and I saw the same thing your talking about.

Question: If you get caught out driving in the rain, do you think the water will just get sucked directly into the filters? That would be my concern for sure.

I think that deflecting flap's job in part is to keep the water (and hard debris) out. I could see this as a potential problem when just washing the SRT if you soaked em'.

Maybe there is a way to make a secure "hinge" that would allow us to "fold up" the flap for when we race or when it's a perfect day? Maybe it's a hinge that "snaps" securely in the down (factory) position, and then you have a button that "releases" it to fold up and maybe it is held up by a velcro strip? Since Velcro works wet or dry, it could be ideal for a quick mod like you have done. This would give us the factory intended protection, and the ability to "open her up".

Is there possibly a factory tested "performance benefit" that the flap produces through factory research? I don't possibly know; but, maybe it forces the air in a "more intense" flow TO the filters than without it?

Tech-heads, please give us your input on this flap thing! What exactly was it designed to do, and are we getting more performance WITH it, or WITHOUT it?

Fun topic, let's see what the Guru's think?

Thanks Ivan.

VERY interesting! I know that CajunViper said that TNT is working on his SRT and did a "race air kit" that gave him an astounding 26 rwhp gain (to 473 rwhp) and 26 rwtq (to 516 rwtq). He said the kit "modified the front air intake with K&N's and a more direct air flow." Sounds like you have already solved the direct air flow issue and now it is a matter of finding the filters. While I don't have my car yet (TOMORROW), the filters appeared to me to be similar to some of the aftermarket set ups like what Tom at BTR sells:

You must be registered for see images

For that matter, you might remove a filter and head down to your local autoparts store that stocks K&N's and see if they have something similar. Or just call TNT and see what they say. Be sure to let us know!

Chris

PS. Sounds like removing and reinstalling the rain baffle is incredibly simple. Carry it with you when it gets cloudy!

I thought about doing this the very first day, what prevented me was:

1) Rain has a straight shot into the I/M
2) Debris (100 MPH tiny rocks) have a straight shot at those filters, I would imagine ripping them to shreds

The TNT setup has to be different than the twin tube setup, well as I think about it it really doesn't. Looks like a single orifice. I could probably take one of my TNT guys off my 97, come up with an adapter that takes the single tube into the larger Intake orifice... Hmmm

Amazing how that would make 26 HP, looks like its pretty free flowing now, guess not!
