Mine had water spotting and what appeared like all of the clear coat gone aside from the hinge and latch areas. I used a dried up tub of Mother's aluminum polish and and old red shop rag and made some noticeable improvement.

Moral of story: Even a crappy attempt can produce results.

If clear coat is gone, hit it with an aluminum polish. If it still has clear coat, try what you use on the rest of the car.

For a while, the peeling clearcoat was covered under warranty. Some have ignored it (which looks just plain nasty), some have removed clearcoat and polish it regularly, others have had it chrome plated. We changed our GTS's over to MGW's product which still look great!!!

I removed my clearcoat for the same reason that it was peeling. I polished it once when I took the clearcoat off and I really haven't had to repolish the thing after several years.

I had water spots and oxidation on my 96 gts fuel door. I started out with 800 wet sanding then 1500. Used Mothers aluminum polish and looks like new. Wet sanding is the key to polishing weathered or neglected aluminum.

Ditto.....:)

I think mine was loose enough to just scrape off with a plastic scraper or something similar which didn't mar it up. Is the door actually aluminum? Mine doesn't really tarnish like normal aluminum, seems more like SS.

Acetone or carb cleaner will get the clearcoat off. Just don't get either of those on the gasket or label inside (remove them...), nor too much on the plastic hinge pin. Heck, just replace that stupid plastic pin with a stainless steel socket head screw.
