I had the same as Phil, fuel gauge reading quarter full when it was empty...I ran out cruising at 80 mph, had to slip the clutch in and coast across several lanes of traffic (with no power steering)! Mine too was replaced under warranty, the fuel pump and gauge sender unit are all one unit. It converts the level of your tank fuel, into a resistance (ohms), as the float arm moves up in the tank this decreases the resistance and the gauge will read full. An erratic gauge sounds like an electrical fault, not mechanical. You can test the resistance of your unit, but it would involve removing it. I have heard from other owners that '97's had fuel pump problems?!...maybe '98's too, huh?
I will never rely on my gauge again! I always fill up, and then zero my mile counter. I average 8 miles to the gallon, so it's easy to work out how many miles I can do on a full tank (not enough, especially with UK fuel prices!)
