Does anyone know if Gen.2 tb's will fit on a Gen.1? If so would it be worth changing them out. I know the Gen.2's are larger in diameter.

They will fit but won't work. The location of the Gen1's alternator interferes with the throttle linkage. I've heard of people swapping the plates so they can stay with the two cable set up but I've never seen anyone do it. There's also vacuum lines that hook up to the GenI TB's for the purge solenoid/Vapor canister that are not on the GenII TB's. You can plug the lines but I think it will throw a code. So my answer is no.

The GenII TB's are close to 62mm at the opening but taper down to 60mm.

The GenI's are about 60mm at the opening and taper down to 56mm.

Check out my gallery as I do offer the service of making your GenI TB's 62mm.

I put them on mine. I think my car runs better now. I swapped out the linkage mech.'s from the gen.1 to the gen.2 's. Took a die grinder and made the hole bigger in the manifold and drilled a hole in the side of the drivers side intake tube close to the throttle body and hooked up the evap line. No codes.
I think it's one of the many things you can do to the gen.1's that all add up after a while.

Hey Mitch,
Sounds like an "illustrated upgrade" project :D Did you take any pictures while doing the mod?

Tha smaller throttle bodies will give you better throttle response, but the larger ones will give you more power at WOT at higher rpm's.

Steve, I would like more info on your comment.

That was true in the days of carburetors - the small carb would have high velocity at lower engine speeds and mixtures would be good. A smaller carb would be air-limited at high RPM, though. A carb that was too large would have low air speed at low RPM and sluggish response with poor mixture control. But a large carb would work well at high RPM.

With port fuel injection, the fuel system doesn't know how fast or slow the air speed at the throttle is, nor can I see that it cares. The fuel is perfectly distributed via each injector and perfectly pre-measured due to O2 sensors, RPM, temp, etc measurements. The only thing that different throttle bodies can do is confuse the process by altering the throttle body opening air flow with the throttle position sensor relationship. I suspect lots of people may put larger TBs on, but use the original TPS. Therefore, at a 20 degree opening the ECU thinks it should get a certain amount of air, but it's actually getting more...

Anyway, all my theorizing aside, if someone has done it and has results, then I'll shut up.

Hey Tom,
Many have shown that using larger TB's without other modification(1.7 RR, Headers, exhaust), you will gain a little HP on the top end, but loss TRQ on the bottom of the RPM scale. There were several that had dyno tested about 3-4 years back, but I would begin to know how to search the old archives for the info. There were several that had post dyno sheets.
