Does such an item exist? The "normal" mopar locking cap is too thick for the outer door to close. Can any one recommend a source if one exists?

I believe that I bought mine at Autozone or Checker. It looks like the one pictured here: http://forums.viperclub.org/rt-10-gts-discussions/608400-locking-gas-cap.html

Sorry, it has no identifying numbers or maker; but, I think that I bought the one mentioned here: http://forums.viperclub.org/rt-10-gts-discussions/570095-locking-gas-cap-5791-same-5991-a.html

Here's another thread that indicates that it is somewhat of a crapshoot when buying a cap, whether it will fit or not. Probably depends on who they source the cap from.

Got my locking cap for my '97 GTS from "The Zone" too. It works fine and fits under the filler door no problem. I've since upgraded to a MGW chrome gas door and it works with that too. I don't have the part number for you though. I thought it didn't really work at first though because it didn't seem to tighten properly. Then I realized that I needed to lube the surfaces with some Zaino tire protectant (or whatever you've got) to make the contact areas that seal the cap to the filler neck slide a little better. After that it started doing the "click-click-click" as gas caps do when they are fully tightened. Now it works like a charm. It was an in-stock part too...not a special order like the local Dodge dealer had to do to get a simple oil filter for my '08 SRT-10 yesterday. Arrgh! :)
