It will be interesting to see how competitive tire pricing will become once the new Viper runs on Pirelli's. I think most people can agree that Michelin pricing has always been top tier. Great tires but at a price, hey you get what you pay for. I was just looking at tire pricing at the Tire Rack and noticed that even the Gen II rear tires offered by Pirelli were $845 each. I can only imagine the Gen V will be more. Though I've never been a fan of Pirelli tires, something tells me the SRT boys will get a wicked tire developed for the new beast. Cost and availabillity will be the question marks in this puzzle.

I've never been a fan of Pirellis either. Only had two defective tires in all of my years of driving, both were Pirellis. Give me Michelins any time.

Previously Viper had a close relationship with Michelin for the development of specialized tires for our Vipers, I would expect the same thing to be going on with Pirelli.

I'm guessing that the parent car company "Fiat" may have something to do with it.

Fiat and Pirelli both Italian companies. Michelin is a french company. I think that may explain the change in tire companies.

I only see 5 tires listed on tire rack for gen 2's gfgoodrich's ta's, gf r1s, hoosier r6, hoosier a6, and michelin ps2's unless your running a custom size? If you do see pirellis for $845 each tell them theyre smoking crack!

I have to admit I'm disappointed by this news. I think anyone who has ran a Pirelli can attest to them being expensive pieces of crap!

Trust me after meeting the SRT Engineers those guys are more ********* performance guys then even some of us. They will never put a tire on the car that they feel isn’t the best that they can offer. Why save a money on a tire only to loss sales because the cars performance isn’t what it should be . It just does not make good business sense . Remember that SRT is now headed by Ralph he would never allow decreased performance from a tire to try and save a couple of dollars a unit. Especially on his performance leader , the car that is conquering the world’s best supper cars.

I have had Pirelli's before and I to was not happy but this new tire I am sure will make you guys happy......

This is the same tired argument people bring to the table referring to mods..."If it's good enough for Dodge and their engineers, why change?"

There are MANY other factors at work, and performance isn't the top priority. Fiscal, political and other agendas all factor in for parts.

Recent articles mentioned that Ralph was testing the Pirelli's on his recent rally in Newfundland. Think he placed really well.

This would have given him some first hand experience driving on wet, gravel and dirt covered roads, as well as some higher speed runs.

I am not losing any sleep about what tires come on the new Viper. Believe SRT is doing their due dilligence on this matter.

... and if you don't like the tires that come with the car, change 'um. (I seriously doubt it will be an issue though.)

cam those tires dont show up on tirerack when searching for front and rear matching sets for gen 2 or gen 3 sets on tire rack. But regardless they are too expensive and are pieces of crap compared to the new super sports.

Those are Pirelli's equivalent to a Sport Cup. Besides 335's are too small and PS2's aren't sticky enough for me:)

Pirelli's motorcycle tires are almost the bottom of the ladder

they don't even beat the cheap econo makes. The co. mantra

seems to be make it soft and slippery.

I disagree about the motorcycle tires. Their Diablo Corsas are among the best (or were). I have a set on my Honda 1000RR and think they're pretty dam good. They also work pretty dam good on the Ducati's, among the finest sportbikes in the world.

Pirelli is a step backwards for Dodge and Viper!

Let's step away from the Viper for a second to see the new Jeep SRT8s delivered with Pirelli Scorpion Tires. These are a notoriously lousy tire. I had them as factory equipment on a few SUVs over the years. Lucky if I made 10,000 miles with them and they were done. Rode like crap from day one. Just complete junk and replaced as quickly as I could.

Now stepping into the new Viper, and ultra high performance tires. I have had a few wheel and tire changes on various vehicles over the years and some were delivered with brand new Pirellis on them. All four tires, were lucky if they lasted 5,000 miles and these are not Sport Cup type of tires I am comparing here. They rode great for about 1,000 miles then fell apart. This is what peope have expected from Pirelli.

Dodge's decision to switch to Pirelli has EVERYTHING to do with Fiat and their sourcing agreements and NOTHING to do with them being the best performing tire. They are good for 1,000 miles on their ultra performance tires and that is it. For Ferrari owners who don't put many miles on their cars away, they are great, but Viper owners are going to be greatly disappointed.

I just hope they did not upset Michelin too much but Michelin is already upset. No Supersport Rear Viper sizes for GEN III and IV tells you it did not go well. Michelin is deliberately not producing that much needed Rear GEN III and IV size to prove a point. Leaves us current owners in the crapper.

I am sure Ralph is just trying to do the best he can with the budgets etc. so we are losing in the tire department to gain somewhere else, but the change to Pirelli will have an affect on current Viper owners which is an issue.

Remember that it took Bob Lutz to personally take responsibility for fighting with procurement to make the switch to Michelin for the Viper as it was not Dodge/Chysler's preferred supplier either. Sorry but Bob is not there to win this one.

Right now this is the only news on the new car that I find troubling and concerning. It's not like 12 different manufacturers make that size of tire.

Yeah but someone decided to put the PS ZP on the Gen 3's. One of the worst tires ever and really not safe @ all. Hopefully another similar decision doens't get made with the Gen 5.

I doubt many have had the chance to experience the Pirelli Trefeo. Not a lot were let into the country before they were stopped and re engineered. They had TONS of grip but weren't lasting as long as Pirelli was hoping. They have just recently started producing them with the new compound and my business partner has them on his SL. Best tire he's had on the car so far and he's gone though 3-4 manufactures. He runs the PSS on his street wheels and they aren't even close in comparison to the grip the Trefeo's have. IF they make a Trefeo for the Gen 5 EVERYONE will be happy. I'll bet $$$ on it

This is the part that is starting to piss me off, if true... and it is hard to see it any other way. I'm a loyal Michelin guy and I'm being penalized by Michelin on this one. :peod:

It's okay, Michelin pissed me off years ago when the GenIV ACR came out they immediately discontinued the Sport Cup in the 345/30-18.

I hope they slap some 365s in the rear. If you can't afford the tires you can't afford the car.
