Ok, I hate to be 'that guy' but .. that seemed like a - yes that's all the rwhp you're going to see on a chassis dyno guys and "that seems about right" so it is what it is.

The gen5 isn't about HP bragging rights, I guess we all need to be beyond that point, and to me this is all this silly vid is addressing. I don't think most buy a viper to claim huge HP numbers, I don't, but am I little disappointed in that number, yea. When these other cars are putting down higher numbers or less drivetrain loss or whatever, it'd be nice to see an SRT vid show a 580 number and say if you see less than that it's dyno variance. Seems they're prepping us for numbers on the lower side of the range for the 640 crank. But when you buy a 662hp car and the dyno averages 610rwhp across a half dozen pulls, and lays down 580rwhp on a mustang dyno, you get spoiled I guess.

Yeah, my stock 08 showed 545 hp and 504 TQ, and this was in line with many other Gen 4.
At 557 HP and 524 TQ the Gen 5 is not showing the promised 40 HP/TQ increase. I will def. put it on the local dyno when it comes but my hopes aren't too high for it to show big numbers.

I've been too busy with work this week to post my own thread, but last weekend I had mine dyno'd (on a Dynojet) with 600 miles on it. The results were odd, the first pull was 506 and pull #2 increased to 529. It seems like something caused timing to be pulled on run 1 but I have no idea what, the curves are similarly shaped with no odd drops (just a gradual difference) so I do not think it was slippage anywhere (tires or clutch). Maybe if my first run would have gone right before some heat soak set in I would have seen 535-540, but who knows.

For comparison there was a 08 Viper there, the only mods being the 4 stock cats swapped to 2 high flow cats and different mufflers. He dyno'd 535 on run 1 and 526 on run 2. So it appears this dyno naturally is lower than other dyno's (I thought this 2 years ago when my G8 dyno'd a solid 20 less than I was expecting). But what I think this definitely proves is that our 40 hp increase is on paper only, the 08-10s were under rated and the 13+ are rated correctly.

A few more details:

- Torque on Run 1 was 485 and Run 2 it was 492.
- Both pulls were with the hood closed
- The shop only had a small fan, one that blew air into the radiator. A big one providing some cool fresh air for the intake would have been nice, but not available.

Unless someone does back to back runs on the same dyno with gen 4 and gen 5 and it shows gen 4 as powerful or more then I don't care. That is how dynos are useful. Back to back runs. Comparing different dynos or different days on the same dyno is silly.

Also you've seen 1/4 mile runs with it. The MT articles showed it pulled as hard or a little harder than a zr1 at Laguna on the straights. You know how much it weighs. Why would you expect it to dyno 600+ at the wheels? Seems pretty obvious to me...

Is my post invisible to you? The 08 dyno'd an hour after I did. Temps went up by 4* with no other changes in humidity or pressure between my run and the 08.

I kinda began to think 13 is overrated.
The GEN IV was and still a legend.

If you're looking for a track only car you might be right. Mechanically not much has changed so you may as well go with the cheaper alternative.

To me the 13 is so much more than that though. When you look at the classics that have aged beautifully they have it all. Powerful engine and proper suspension, a curvacious timeless body shape, and a top of the line interior. All gen Vipers have had the power and suspension, Gen 1, 2, and 5 have the body (sorry 3 and 4 owners, they look great now but I think it's too angular to age well), but only the 5 has the interior. That's why I own one. And why I don't consider it overrated at all.

What about power under the curve at lower RPM levels? If someone has them, post a chart from a stock Gen IV and a chart from a stock Gen V done on the SAME dyno under the SAME temp, pressure and humidity conditions by the SAME operator. That is the only way to tell the difference.

This car is rated 40HP more, right? But does that mean you should see, on average, 40 more at the rear wheels? The numbers I have see, as reported on the internet by owners, ranged from 525-540. This particular car made 557, and the one Hennessey dyno'd made 558. Thats roughly 17-33 more rear wheel HP than the Gen IV. The quickest tested Gen IV, as reported by the magazines, was 11.6@126. The quickest tested Gen V, as reported by the magazines, was 11.3@129. A difference of .3 and 3MPH. Is that not to be expected by all of the tweaks this Gen V has over the Gen IV?

nope, the more power you gain at the crank, the more is lost due to friction in the driveline... 15% of 640 is more than 15% of 600

Another thing to consider when comparing runs is the transmission temp of each car... if the car isn't up to proper operating temps, there will be some excess power being scavenged from the driveline.

At a local "reveal' yesterday the staff told me that every engine is dyno'd at Arrow before installation. Is this correct? If so, it would be nice if Dodge supplied a copy of the dyno sheet along with the car.

Im more interested in seeing what vacuum it pulls at full throttle and what backpressure the exhaust sees.

If a simple mod can unlock a decent whack of power then there will be much fun to be had.

Stats are interesting but the last time I checked they did not win races. The car has already proven that it is formidable on a road course. It also did an 11.1 in the quarter on a warm, humid day after being hot lapped. ( I was there to see its runs.) Yes. It had drag radials on it. But I am not sure that the drag radial used was the best choice for the car. Brooks, who is the person behind Dragtimes and has some significant time behind the wheel of Vipers at a drag strip, did most of the runs. His view was that a different tire should have been used.

On a 50 degree, 20% humidity day, even with street tires, the car will do far better. Will the McClaren, the turbo porsche and the GTR do better in the quarter mile? Yes. And they will all do better without the driver having to have a sophisticated launch and shift skill set. But the Viper is not about nannytech allowing anyone that can point and shoot to look capable. It is a driver's car - a magnificent anachronism. It is a semi sophisticated/upgraded late sixties/early seventies road racing muscle car. One that still requires a skill set to properly drive at the edge of its capabilities but in the Gen V with a bit less fear of Viper bite.

Here's a great video with Randy Pobst comparing the GT-R and Audi R8 V10+. One is considerably faster, one is more of a driver's car, one he loves, the other is a bore. The Viper is a driver's car, even if something else is quicker in the drags. Guys that don't live their life a 1/4 mile at a time shouldn't really care. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noEZL3hWk5o&feature=player_embedded

Those numbers are realistic. What were the disappointed expecting, 0% drive train loss?

You are correct. The engines are assembled at CAAP and then shipped to Arrow to be dynoed. They run a canned cycle and monitor all of the factory sensors with a max RPM of 5000.
