Gen1 fuel filler to tank gasket installation

I found evidence of a leak at this junction and am putting in a new gasket. Seems like a horrible design, but I realize it’s a bit of a packaging issue. Do any of you with experience changing this out recommend using any type of sealant at all? How about lubrication to get the filler tube started into the gasket? My old one is swollen and cracked. Thanks!

Silicone spray. Don't use anything petroleum based on rubber parts.

Was referring to oil.
Of course make sure compatibility.
