Why is something like this so popular in the first place??? Park your car at Taco Bell for a day? I don't get it!
The last time we all got together there :D

Like a lot of people have mentioned, the main problem is the car "clubs" or forum group members who decide to descend en masse on a gathering.
Have the same issue here at some informal gatherings, all the choice spots are taken up by 20-30 vettes or mustangs of similar years and colors,
and then they put cones out for their late arriving bro's with the same car.
Without question the Vettes are the worst with Mustangs coming on strong.

My old ride from the Crystal Cove days ....pre C & C old Crystal Cove article... http://www.drivingline.com/2013/05/cars-coffee-the-real-beginnings-at-crystal-cove/

No Gen 3's then.....

Then there was the time I tried to steal the Crystal Cove show back to the Newport Peninsula... ( I called it "Back the the Beach".... LOL )
Some of us Viper owners tend to be a rebellious lot :headbang:

I hated the new C & C parking lot in Irvine... No character

It's was the Late Nov/Dec 2006 and as you can see it was destined to become a very talented show! (The fire departement :usa: loved to stop by and make sure everything was done safely! ;) ) We had some good 50+ car turnouts which was great at the time as C&C was maybe 250

In the end ....I started it at the wrong time of the year and as the last photo shows ......we froze our assets off! Then my other half at the time got a transfer to Vegas and my fun was over ..... :(:(:(

Ahhhh what could have been.... plenty of parking .... babes at the beach.... Ok I probably would have got arrested... :drive:

Re: Glad they are going to limit the amount Corvettes & Mustangs at Cars & Coffee Irv

My main question is whether the "gatekeeper" can actually identify a unique car. There are some extraordinary cars that may look ordinary at first glance.

Yes, it would be nice to be able to fit everyone, but there are already enough Corvette-only, Mustang-only, etc. clubs and events. For these events you want to promote variety. I think the best suggestion in the thread is to say 10 max of any type of car, first come first serve. There shouldn't be any hurt feelings over that, and everybody is treated equally.

It's also a matter of humility... if you have a Genesis, it's great that you're an enthusiast, but you don't need to park in the show area. It's like the guy who takes a front row seat at an event and then is embarrassingly told that that row is reserved and ushered to the back.

Wow.. Those shows are amazing. We take all the cars we can get at Cleveland C&C. If it goes fast and/or looks unique, bring it.

Hmm, the whole "rejecting" cars thing seems a bit obnoxious. And you can't simply have someone reject cars. What if a seemingly common Porsche turns out to be a RUF CTR2? Or that ordinary C5 Vette is actually a Lingenfelter or something rarer than a Ferrari or Viper?

I'm going to see what the fuss is all about when I'm out there in a few weeks. Any advice?

more like your car *****! Many of us started with mustang, corvette and graduated to viper. I don't forget that which is why I am happy to strike up conversation with any one who takes pride in their ride. Who knows, one day they may be behind the wheel of a viper or other exotic.

OK...maybe a stupid question/suggestion since I don't know the area.

Why doesn't this even move to a bigger lot. Surely there is somewhere that could pack more cars in rather then getting into this elitist BS

Ha ... I started with a 1972 **** brown Ford Maverrick for $600 and graduated to a teal green Ford Granada for $1800. I hated those $78/month payments!
Now that 1984 205 HP Corvette was the real quantum leap for me... :lmao:

Then in 1993 I saw the Viper at the Orlando Convention Center so ...what did I do.... Got a better job so I could afford one!

It's 600 cars already does it need more? Ford loans out it's restrooms so that is a great help. It's in an industrial area to keep the noise down. It's where the 405 & 5 merge so great access. Not many bigger lots around then this. All it's missing are babes and beach...

Re: Glad they are going to limit the amount Corvettes & Mustangs at Cars & Coffee Irv

From 2009

Attention all Irvine Cars and Coffee patrons and participants. Freeman Thomas one of the organizers, has made the following announcement

-------

As many have pointed out, we're faced with overcrowding at Cars & Coffee. It has been our desire from the outset to welcome EVERYONE, but that has been with the request that this be a word-of-mouth gathering, not promoted online or through the media. This is why we have asked area media and websites to not cover it from the very start, and most have been cooperative about that. The original vision of Cars & Coffee continues to be the preservation of what was started at Crystal Cove, to host cars that are of interest and are unusual. It has never been a "commercial" thing. We enjoy the simplicity, just like we enjoy the racecars of the 50's w/o advertising. We frown on commercial activity at C&C. Even selling your car must be done discreetly (no big signs). If people are interested in your car, trust us, they will see a small business card or advert on your seat. Even us, we only show something if it is of interest at C&C.

What makes it "of interest?" How to define "unusual?" You'd get lots of opinions on that. One suggestion we've heard is... cars that aren't driven to work every day. If it's a car that is driven every day, odds are, it's not a car that will get people out of bed at 6 a.m. on a Saturday. Of course there will be a few exceptions (we won't penalize you if you drive your Talbot-Lotus to work), but that can be a general guide. If you remember the original Crystal Cove gathering, they did get to the point of excluding cars. We are trying to avoid that and we have only turned away cars when we are full. We rely on people to "self-police" in their awareness as enthusiasts that a car you'd see in the shopping center parking lot on a Tuesday is probably not a top priority for the exhibitor lot at C&C. Such a car shouldn't be taking a space on Saturday morning that would require us to turn away a Goggomobil, a Jaguar XK-120, a Bugatti Veyron or a Ferrari 599. It shouldn't prevent us from allowing a manufacturer to reveal their latest hotly-anticipated model like the Honda Clarity, Fiat 500, or Nissan GT-R, or perhaps a manufacturer's concept car(s) or a ????? because the lot is full. Those cars DESERVE to have an exhibit spot. We're all about interesting AND unusual cars. We're discussing a lot of solutions including using the spectator lots more creatively.

Our parking structure holds 700 cars! We urge everyone to use it if you bring something not appropriate for the show. It's a matter of courtesy for your fellow enthusiasts. The south lot holds an additional 70 cars behind the building and 80 cars at the top of the hill behind the structure. These might be used to extend the show especially as the weather gets nicer. Ideas like reserving the spots in front of the cafe for car clubs or same model car groups are a possibility, but please ask first.

We ask everyone to please help us preserve what the founders of Crystal Cove began. Respect the integrity of the exhibit area and use the parking structure for spectator cars. We are VERY open to POSITIVE and POLITE suggestions!!!! Above all, communicate with us, the organizers, especially if you are thinking of showing up with your whole forum in tow. Please get permission first or at least respect the decision of the organizers when they ask you to park together in the spectator lot.

We have hosted C&C since it began in October 2006. That's 120 shows and over 60,000 cars. C&C has had its low points but its high points have exceeded even the original Crystal Cove such as when Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Porsche, "Powered By Ford", "British Cars" and BMW were the "Featured Marque" due to great organizing by the clubs. I think this is why we love C&C.

BTW, some people have suggested using the large lot across Gateway. That lot belongs to the Irvine Company and we'd have to rent it (not cheap ... we checked), so that's not an option.

The "bloom" seems to have come off the rose, so it's time to prune it. If you want C&C to continue we all need to remind each other that we're all guests on PRIVATE PROPERTY at C&C. The Mazda and Ford employees go out of their way to share the space with all of us. In turn, we ask that everyone RESPECT THE PROPERTY, RESPECT EVERYONE AT THE SHOW (including the lady out front who greets you at 6 a.m. with a smile. She has probably experienced/driven more classics, exotics and performance cars than most of you. She's the one Dan Gurney, Stirling Moss and Carroll Shelby know as "Linda."), USE TRASH RECEPTACLES, and DRIVE CONSERVATIVELY. Only by doing these things can we keep our welcome.

My daily is still one of the cars I started with nearly 15 years ago. 1997 Plymouth Neon ACR. I am not ashamed one bit to admit it either :drive:

Re: Glad they are going to limit the amount Corvettes & Mustangs at Cars & Coffee Irv

We attend a local cruise night often. It's not uncommon for 500 vehicles to arrive with an amazing variety. Last week there was an old MB Unimog, rat rods, musclears, exotics...you name it. Usually, mine is the only Viper.

In the late 1980s, I started showing a Plymouth Superbird. Many shows turned me away because my car wasn't an "antique" yet. I was even told once...." it's just a used car". To this day, I remember which shows they were...and have never entered...despite having national winning cars that now would be welcomed.

It's true that I don't understand the fascination of bringing a new car to the shows and cruise nights...but respect that those with a new Challenger, Mustang, etc, just want to be a part of the "culture."

If these events want to turn away certain cars to ensure what the organizers think is a good "mix"....it's their event and they can do so. However, this elitist attitude has no place in what I consider a hobby that should welcome everyone. Many people I met over the years started small and worked their way up...partially due to their welcome into the fold regardless of what vehicle they had.

I am a national Vice Chair and local President of a Chrysler car club. We welcome everyone...regardless of what car they have. Heck, we welcome members if they're just an enthusiast.

Back on topic. While I understand not wanting a whole Corvette club to take up most of the space...I have a real problem with turning anyone away. Cars and Coffee needs to remember that without the cars...you have no show. Driving to the event and being turned away...would cause me to never come again. How would you like to be the one that drives to the event...only to be turned away?

We all love Vipers, but I'm sure to those with a Ferrari, Lamborghini...Veyron...our cars aren't very interesting...they're just Dodges. Perhaps these lowly American cars should be turned away too.

Those of us fortunate enough to have these cars should be thankful...not looking down at those with less.
