Grrrrr Belt flew off again

Well I was driving and smooth sailing until I decided to gun it and test out my new PS2's that I haven't broken in yet....and what a beautiful thing they are. I had a beautiful run; until my power steering and AC went out. Took a look at the temp gauge....250. FAWK. So I drove it 3 blocks to my wife's father's who is a mechanic. The balancer was wobbled again. I don't know how? Loctite Red was applied and everything was tightened last week when I "fixed it". Any other ideas? The dampener looks fine? This is getting frustrating. I don't mind getting another balancer. I am worrying that the drive without the water pump and other things working could be really killing my engine. How worried should i be after driving it a few blocks? Am I at risk of having cracked any cylinder heads or anything else? Frustrating as I have spent good money on getting a new clutch system installed, new PS2's and have spent money to get the car running as it should....I could have had a nice set of headers and hi-flows by now

get a factory balancer and new bolt, and at 250 i doubt you hurt it but it aint good---------------

The balancer is press-fit. You may have damaged the crank snout or the inside of the balancer. Take off the balancer and inspect the snout. If it is OK, try again with a NEW balancer and bolt. Also use a balancer pinning kit on the next go around.

Worst case, if the crank is damaged, you will have to remove the crank, and either machine the end and key it with a custom balancer/hub, or replace the crank.

Probably cheaper than the cost of removing the engine and taking it apart to get the crank out.

Anywhere from 1-3K for used up to a brand new in box.

Probably no harm....... a new SFI-rated balancer is less than 1 front tire

Agreed - probably didn't do any damage to the engine from the heat. I know of very few people that never lost a power steering pulley or otherwise threw a serpentine belt at one time or another and 'limped' the car home with the temp gauge pegged... To be sure, change your oil and check to see if you have any coolant in it, and keep an eye on your coolant tank to see if oil shows up on the surface. You probably would have blown a hose or had coolant puke out of the system before any engine damage happened.

What is the correct torque to use on the crank dampener? I am going to let the loctite red set and put the belt back on so that I can get the car to a dealership.

thanks....that is way more than I was expecting. I thought it would be around 175 ft lbs. I am going to have to buy a new air gun. Is there anything on the crankshaft I should inspect to see if I have damaged anything besides the bolt? The bolt is definitely toast and am getting a new bolt. The harmonic balancer looks fine so I am thinking I just didn't apply the right torque on the bolt and didn't let the loctite red set enough. I am praying I am not going to need major repairs from the two times this belt has flown off

I have seen quite a few posts over the years about the bolt backing out. It seems to me that the best idea is to torque it with a torque wrench so that you know what you are ending up with.

However, I've looked down there and I don't see how people get to that bolt in order to put that kind of torque on it.

NEVER use an impact wrench to do a torque wrench's job. Unless you want to fail.

I used a 31mm 6-pt socket with a 5" wobble extension directly on it and another 2" extension, and my special tool to keep the hub from turning. The car was in the air for other purposes I'm sure the tires touching the ground will work too.

no, the ebrake wont hold when doing this.

make sure the front of that crank snout is ok. it "can" be fixed/keyed in the car if its busted up, but the only guy i know who can do that is in fort lauderdale.

The DBB e-brake kit is actually just a "spot" caliper, not an e-brake.

The difference is, a spot caliper is meant to hold a stationary vehicle whereas an e-brake is meant to stop a moving vehicle.

In either case it passes inspection so it works for me.

a roe pin kit can be installed with the crank in the car. do that. it wont come off again.

I agree with Joe - do the Roe pin kit its cheap, can be done in the car, and it won't come off again. That and the correct torque with a torque wrench. If you didn't use a torque wrench, you most likely had it nowhere near 250 ft-lbs the previous times. Its a lot lol.
