Does the factory GTS gas cap have an applied coating? I can't tell if it might be clearcoated or it is just raw. Can it be cleaned with say a "Flitz" metal polishing compound?

I stripped mine with Easy-Off and poliched it for over an hour and it still had the dull aluminum lok. It might be cast like the wheels on the '96 Vipers because I had the same results when I tried to polish them. I finally just got a chrome gas cap and have no regrets.

Luckily mine still looks new, I do like the cap that has the logo on it, I forgot what company it was from but its $350, a bit to much for me for a gas cap

It is clear coated, but that can easily be taken off with paint remover.

Unfortunatelly, the cap is made out the cheapest aluminum possible. As you polish it, you will notice that little holes open up. It looks like it is made out of swiss cheese.

I tried to get the chrome version but since the aluminum is so pimply underneath, the chrome exposes all the imperfections. So needless to say, the result is far from perfect.

Did the base of the cap really come out PERFECT?

I am currently in the process of polishing it myself and I can see the pin holes the chroming place was talking about. But I still think I can DREMEL it to perfection.

You kind of cheated by painting the base black.
