Hello, I really didn't know the best place to post this, so I apologize if this is the wrong place. Im currently looking at Vipers to buy, I started off by looking at only 96-97 GTS Vipers, but then I started looking at 04 SRT-10s because I found one for a good deal. Now im in between the 2 and its very very hard to decide on which one to get. I love love the looks of the 96-99, to me they just look more like true viper over the SRTs. But, the SRT is 6 years newer and has been updated quite alot since the GTSs. So bascially im just looking for help/advice on which one I should get and if anyone could list some reasons would be wonderful. Thanks alot for the help!

Welcome to the boards!! You will like it alot here!

Really, it does come down to style preferance more than anything, but the best advice I can give it to buy the book by the guy who started the Viper Club of America. It is called the VIPER BUYERS GUIDE by Maurice Liang. Any book store will be able to help you with that. That will answer more questions than you can imagine. Even ones you do not have, yet!!:D

Having owned all 4 generations i can tell you the Gen 1-2 definately have more GAWK factor while the gen 3-4 are much more complete ,refined cars. The gen 4s in particular simply offer an outstanding driving experience and are probably the closest thing you can buy to a race car on the street .

If you choose a 1992 - 2002 model viper, gawkers will not confuse you with a corvette. if you want less looks and more preformance...get a 2003 -2008 model and blow the doors offs your buddys.
I choose looks over speed. gen 1&2 models have egnough power to get you in trouble :drive:

My preference is the GTS and thats why I bought one..lol But it just depends on what your looking for. The GTS has the WOW factor and is very raw. The srt is a little easier to drive and a little moe civilized. I went for the 99 GTS because of looks, last year with lumpy cam and forged internals etc

But it's very subjective... I just love those bumble bees with the black wheels!!!

That's the 'ticket'!!! Prices are about the same with small changes depending on year. Mileage seems to be the biggest factor. There is a low mileage 01 ACR Bumblebee in the clasified.

Gen 3s came with runcraps and have traction problems. The Gen 2s not only look better, but they sound better. Because of the rear tailpipes the sound is terrific and can't be reproduced with sidepipes.

They both have advantages. They're pretty equal I think. I prefer the looks and sound of the Gen2 and have added the Gen 4 bigger lightweight brakes sc and everything else I wanted into my car. Now I'm driving it until it wears out.

Buy the one that makes YOU the happiest.

I own both. The GTS has some notable advantages. The interior is a bit more relaxed fitting, the pedals are separated better, the outward visibility is better and the low end power is better. The SRT has amazing brakes and a tad more power in the upper midrange. I have '08 Viper tires on my GTS so the steering is like a scalpel. There is a bit more body roll with the GTS but I think a thicker sway bar would fix that.
Don't worry about performance because the sky is the limit for either one. If you like the appearance of the GTS, buy it. Despite what many might tell you, there is no overall superiority between the two.

There is not much argument over what the classic viper look is.. Gen I and II's optimize what vipers are. The GTS is one of the best looking car built over the past 30 years. My reason for going for the SRT was top down driving, and comfort. Being 6' 4 with long legs, no matter how hard I tried I just could fit. Though the look isn't as unique as the Gen I&II, it still turns plenty of heads, and it has yet to be confused with a vette. :usa:

Easy on those side pipe comments pal...

You must be registered for see images

YOU are the reason I spent time asking the Corsa guy questions on side exhaust Dave. I followed your sidepipes instal and had plans to do the same so that I could build an aluminium sailpanel under the back of my GTS. Alas, after speaking to the Corsa guy ... I'm keeping my rear exit exhaust and my sailpanel project became a "when I have nothing better to do" because the sailpanel with rear Exh. will have limited effectiveness.

I wasn't going to post, but since the choices are gts and sTR there's NO such thing as an STR 10 so I'd say you made a psychological decision before you started this thread.

No one else noticed??? Guess that's another reason to choose GTS, it's never been mistaken or misspelled, lol.

Spill the beans man!!! What could Dr. Corsa have possibly told you to make you sway from side exhaust, ESPECIALLY after my SLAVING over the camera and computer to post all of those pics of my modding?!? :dunno:

Sorry. I'm OK. It's in the water here.

Sorry Dave, he said that even the crossover side exhaust (left bank engine exits on right side et al) does not have enough lenght to mellow the tone/frequencies of the exhaust to what the rear exit sounds like.

He had a cutaway 'muffler' there and although I was involved with exhaust technologies until the last 14 years the advances are amazing. The muffler looks like a glass pack from the outside and inside has a couple oblong ovals cut out, but inside that 'bulb' is layer upon layer of SS pipe. May have been as many as 10 layers of sound cancellation chambers around the main exhaust pipe. So much for building my own mufflers ... won't be doing that anymore.

Although my GTS is extremely loud - it's quiet inside the car. Many people came up to me at VOI and said that my car had the best sound of the over 400 Vipers there. I'll admit that I didn't hear any cars that sounded better than mine.

I have a 96 GTS and after driving the Gen III and IV it opened my eyes to how crappy the early Vipers brakes really are. I upgraded to 14" Stop Techs (thanks JonB!) and I'm still jealous. The newer Viper (2001 and up) is the best of both new and old and is a beast. My ultimate car would be a Gen IV Viper with a GTS body.

01 or 02 GTS. Best of gen II generation with ABS brakes. Power, braking, handling can easily be improved if it doesn't have enough for you. Remember it was the Gen 2 cars that won Lemans,Daytona etc...........GTS Bruce

No censorship as long as you don't type nasty or 'politically incorrect' words or comments. Censorship is often a good thing when used with taste.

I personally love the GEN 2's. I won't own a sports car that is a convertible.

The hood and front end is what made the viper. They ruined that with the SRT's but gave it a lot of nice upgrades. Keep in mind though, older vipers are more expensive to replace parts on (20k just for the hood from dodge) so if you have any kind of spill in it and it touches the hood it's most likely totaled.

The SRT's panels are readily available and much easier to come by. The hood wow's people when you open it. Point blank. I can easily miss an SRT driving but to miss a GTS or Gen 2 its hard. They are very bulky looking and have a more aggressive look, in my opinion.
