Several weeks ago, I posted the stock flow characteristics for a set of GTS-R heads.

GTS-R vs. Stock Head Flow

And as the previous post showed that the heads do not exhibit extraordinary low lift flow numbers, for some street applications, these heads might just be ideal because of the extra water passages which help the head cool the engine much better than the stock head.

The first photo shows the stock head (exhaust side). The water jacket appears as a bulge around the spark plug well.

The second photo shows the same angle of the GTS-R head. Notice how the head casting is bulged out around the entire exhaust port. This is all the extra water capacity these heads have. For some high horsepower engines, these heads might be a good investment in helping keep the engine/head cool and for high boost applications, the extra cooling would help prevent detonation.

Wow, thats a significant difference !! I'm sure the heads way a few pounds more, but im sure its worth it !!

You are making me wish I bought GTSR Heads now, instead of having a stock set port and polished !! ;-)

Jon,

You can always sell your ported heads to a non S/C car and buy a set of GTS-R heads. You might check and see though... I thought I heard someone say that these heads are getting harder to get.

I found a few, when I was researching. I dont know if they got picked up, but I know a few options, and not a lot of people are hunting these down, as they are expensive and dont flow out of the box any better then stock at low lift. They just have huge potential.

We'll see what happens :-D

So why would DC make two kinds of heads?
What's the downside of the R head as the only head. I don't see how the R should be any more expensive to make.

Why stick everyone with a head that has smaller cooling passages and lower flow?

I know the ports can only be so big before you start paying the price in low end power but the R heads don't flow that much better in un-ported form.

I bet emissions. Larger coolant passage would take longer to heat up and run cooler; promotes HC and CO emissions. Is the R head emissions certified?

The R Head was created at the request of the GTS-R racing program. The stock heads caused overheating problems on 24 endurance events.

Actually DC makes three heads: stock, Mopar performance, and GTS-R heads!

The GTS-R heads cost more because:
CNC porting
Copper valve seats
Hardend steel inserts in the bolt bosses
Small production volumes

The GTS-R block is different than the production block too. The main journals are a different size and some of the mounting holes are not drilled and tapped.
