What is the LEAST expensive true race computer available right now? Motec? I also heard that although AEM does not have a solution specific for the Viper, one could use any of their PNP systems with a harness from the car it is for and do a wire by wire conversion. hmmm.............

Actually yes I do,

The unit is almost complete, they had a set back with the housing. Since the Viper computer has a plug which is attached in the middle of the unit their existing case did not work for the application.

They are in the process of making a prototype custom housing, which should be done shortly. Everyone was away for over a week for the holidays so the only progress that was made on the unit was the software testing which went smooth with no hiccups.

We are taking bets here on what amount of hp will be picked up over a stock ECU on an almost stock viper currently making 439.6 rwhp and 485lb's torque.

Will it be closed/open loop like stock or can it do closed loop based on wideband 02 input like the SpeedPro and the new Accel ?

Hi guys, I've just signed up and look forward to swapping ideas and who knows, maybe make a friend or two

Just wanted to say that the new plug and play EMS for the Viper sounds fantastic and I hope that it lives up to its potential. There'll be a fair bit of development to get it just right, but there's no reason it should not be 95% there once available to y'all.

We've had these systems for a few years now here in New Zealand and value for money they are the way to go for 95% of hot street cars. The LINK is the most popular here and I used to tune my car by driving around a road race track while the tuner played with himself in the passenger seat on his laptop. It's a lot more fun than a dyno and real world performance.

We used a turbo setup on a Subaru wagon running 9:1 and 18psi on pump gas at 24 degrees timing on full boost. What made that possible was a very hi tech water injection system made in the Uk by ERL called the Aquamist. It is 3D mapped and atomises the water vapour at 8-9 bar pressure. It allowed more timing than the intercooler could alone and allowed us to achieve mileage results 33% better than a stock engine while making 50% more power than a stock turbo setup. The LINK EMS allowed us to work in hundreds of 100 rpm pockets under varying loads and boost to isolate where knock occurred and alter timing only where it was a problem. It meant that we could run maximum timing and only retard in 100rpm pockets where we had to. This is far superior to the piggy back setups. We were not near the limits, but as it was a daily driver, had to be sensible incase a super hot humid day caused detonation etc.

re an earlier post about MOTEC.... no they are not the cheapest race option - MOTEC is the setup for the serious customer who simply must have the best setup and they are not cheap - a full setup with all the fruit incl. labour etc to tune could set you back $8,000US easily depending upon how serious you were on a custom set up. They are the top shelf item worldwide at the moment. Developed in Australia many years ago, no one else has yet been able to top them as the racers first choice in the winners circle where high power per cube is made. A properly set up MOTEC will add significant power over any typical EMS setup over the rpm range... often as much as 100hp, but the real power is useable power across a range not a peak figure.

I see SVS use MOTEC, and that tells those in the know that if the rest of their twin turbo set up is based upon similar quality, it is top shelf stuff - as good as money can buy. Also someone that has developed a kit using MOTEC has already spent a lot of R&D setting them up for that combo which will save you money compared to a custom job. MOTEC will never be a cheap budget option however.

Therefore a good EMS will get you 95% there for a lot less money, so a MOTEC is really only for those who can either afford it and don't care about cost, or those who simply have to have the best setup.

re Halltech etc.... if someone is developing a special EMS plug and play for the VIPER, save your money till that comes out and get it if you want value for money as it is already most of the way there for you... by the time you fart *** around trying to perfect one of the other EMS systems, you might as well fork out on a MOTEC.

In my experience, few customers can be bothered going to the amount of time and effort a good MOTEC set up requires for a custom engine, but the guys who want to win serious races, making 1.5 (n/a)to 8hp (turbo/blown) per cubic inch should be looking at MOTEC as it is proven around the globe having millions of dollars invested in its R & D. It makes even an execellent product like our kiwi LINK redundant at that level. Its horses for courses.

For under 1000hp, on a Viper, a good plug and play EMS is more than good enough IF setup properly. Face it guys, you'd be hard pressed to feel any improvements at that level by seat of pants so it gets a bit academic unless you can hook it all up.

.............Still waiting

Its amazing how lucky people with Hondas... Rx7s.... Supras... 300Zs.... are

for $1000 they can buy a full featured powerful plug and play stand alone engine management computer that plugs directly into the stock ECU harness and tap into full control of their car. And datalog!

Whats AEM doing over there anyway? Did they forget about the Vipers?

Late october is the date for the first boxes to ship. This is per AEM. We are ANXIOUSLY awaiting the knowledge of what year the first run will be made for as there are a number of differences per model. Check out the software and get used to it, we will all be using it soon enough...

We're releasing our software next week.
There are 103 Vipers with our VEC2 now.
The software will allow people to do their own tuning.
Then we'll release the VEC2 as its own product for naturally aspirated and forced induction.

You must be registered for see images

Sean, how much technical knowhow is necessary for an owner to use the software on a FI car without hurting something?

Oh, and any news on the intercooler? :) :)
