Handling and ride quanlity with 19\'s and 20\'s

I recently purchased a set of HRE 545R's 19's upfront and 20's in the rear(Thanks to Brian Evans). The rims are shod with Pirelli tires (345/25's in the rear) and fully polished, even the barrells. They should look awesome on my 04 black Mamba. The rims and tires are at Chucks and will be installed next week. I can hardly wait.

Getting to my question - I have heard from some that I may feel some deterioriation in ride quality, handling and drivability with the step up in rim size. Can those with the plus one setup (19's and 20's) please post your exeperiences and seat of the pants evaluations? No matter what they are going on the car, but I would like to hear some impressions before I install them so I know what to expect.

In doing my research I have found that even though the rims are larger, the overall diameter is actually .4" smaller (rear) and the weight is definitely less than that of the OEM setup with run flats. So I am a bit perplexed as to why they would deteriorate ride quanlity and handling??? I have to assume that the smaller sidewall has something to do with it but that would only affect the ride on rough roads.

Here is a little teaser...

Drove a car a while back with 20s all around and Pirellis, tracked better than
my stock tires on my 05. Not sure on the ride because it had lower springs.

haha

what b/s

I have had and still have 20's 19's and 18's

Let me tell you 1st off the ride quality is much better with the new rims/ tires for a couple of reasons

non runflats are better for traction
non run flats have softer walls thus better for ride
non runflats have softer tire compound thus faster toget heated thus better for grip.
non runflats are very predictable unlike runcraps

I feel so strongly against run craps that I gotta say this as crazy as it may seem. "you probally saved your life or the car by ditching runcraps"

I had a crazy experience with them and bacicly i almost crashed my car for no good reason execpt for the tires.

vd..

also runcraps need stronger and heavier rims witch kills speed.

nice wheels!!! :2tu: :2tu: :2tu:

That is the imformation I have been looking for Viper D, thak you. Have you compaired the Cup tires to the non run flats on the street? I am interested in if the cup tires will work on the street and how long and how many miles they will take to come up to temperture at say an outside temp of 65-75 degrees. Are they safe if one gets caught up in a rain storm? Run Flats are JUNK!

Thanks Viper D. Useful information. I have experienced the same issues with the Runflats i.e. lack of traction and loose rear end... Quite scary sometimes. I am looking forward to the new setup.

Question did you do the air pressure sensors in yours? Did your car recognize them right away? I think 2005's do but I have a 2004 which must be reprogrammed I think.

Have to get them reprogrammed (05's as well)

Ricky I put the rims and tires on yesterday. Chuck couldnt get the car to recognize the sensors. I have to call HRE tomorrow. Other than that, the rim and tire package is aweseme. I will post pics tomorrow. As for the handling, it is 10 times better than the run flats. the rear HREs with tires must be at least 10 pounds lighter. You can feel the difference.

what size wheels? What diameter and how wide. Do you have the exact part number of the wheel, not just HRE's model number which does not tell us the size.

Also what size and spec tire did you use?

Re: Handling and ride quanlity with 19\'s and 20\'s

Altros- Most of the information is found in my initial post.

I purchased HRE 545Rs 19x10 in the front with 275/30's and 20x13 with 345/25's in the rear - Pirelli Assymetricos. The rims are fully polished.

I was initially worried about deterioriation in ride quality since most assume going to a larger diameter rim and tire package will be heavier and will adversly affect the handling characteristics. additionally one would assume the tire diameter is larger than stock whish would also affect handling and final gear ratio. Well it just so happens that the tire diameter is actually .4" smaller than stock and each rim and tire must be at least 10 pounds lighter. I physically picked up each. The stock run flats are extremely heavy and the stock rim is heavy since DC reinforced the rim to handle the run flats.

You have feel the difference in unsprung weight. The tech (Rob) at Tators even mentioned it to my after a test drive.
