'01 GTS OK, I got all the parts I SHOULD need to hard wire my mirror mounted radar detector. I checked the fuses in the dash and found an appropriate 'keyed' fuse to hook into with the fuse adaptor that I ordered on line to add a second line and still protect both wires.

I've done tons of installs in the past, but this is the first I've tried with a '01 GTS. There has always been plenty of room between the trim and the windshield to run the wire from around the mirror down to the fuse block on the front side. The GTS seems to be the ONLY car I've ever seen this on, but the trim is so tight that I can't slide the wire into it to keep it out of view as it crosses the windshield. I don't see any screws to loosen up to give me some room ... am I missing something? Is it just a matter of prying the trim away from the windshield/frame to push it in there? If anyone has some input, I'd appreciate it. Yes, I did search and didn't find anything about this particular problem.:D

Explaining Viper things to you
Swing by tomorrow. My V1 is hardwired to the fuse panel at the knee blocker with a tap, wire run up the A-pillar, the works. I've even got beer if you're thinking before noon.

Thanks for the offer, Dave, but I'm ******* tomorrow.:( Would love to see if you have the same gap *I* do or not in the windshield trim. Can we get together some time other than tomorrow to show me how it fits? I'll bring the beer ... just tell me when.

I have a V1 also and the pictures below show where I ran my wire. This is only possible because the V1 uses a flat telephone type wire.

The last picture with the yellow arrow shows the channel that the wire is pressed into. I've seen some installations where the wire runs along the windshield and the small bit of loose wire at the top or bottom always bothered me. The channel I used gets tighter at the bottom so the wire is visible at the bottom. Most people would never notice the wire.

Just thought I would offer an alternative wire routing method.

I dunno about the SRT, but on the RT the mirror wire wasn't a keyed power, so if you didn't manually unplug your V1 after every drive it drained your battery.

I do know of a guy that ran new wire through the windshield frame in his 1994 to alleviate that problem.

Thanks for the ideas and that IS a clean install for the V1. I'm going to check it again this morning with the possibility of running it along the front edge of the top trim and using something to hold it there since I can't seem to get the wire UNDER the trim. May use a thin strip of flat black gaffers tape and see how that works.

I don't unplug it, I just turn it off...a simple turn of the power knob on the V1 ;). My pre-start mental checklist includes turning it back on.

Realized that there ISN'T any trim ... it's all part of the frame. I ran the flat cord from my ****** along the front edge, just barely tucked out of sight and then applied skinny strips of gaffers tape to hold it in place. There really isn't any pressure on the wire, so it's just keeping it from dropping out of the groove. Good enough for now until I can get by Dave's house to see what he has in mind.

Anyone ever hard wire on a Gen 1? I'm curious as to where to run the wire as well, and really wanted to use the mirror light. Oh well.

I'm probably the least skilled handiman on this forum, but I was able to install my V1 above the mirror and run the wires on the upper part of the windshield where you can't see them.

I asked the same question earlier in the thread but for a Gen 3. I'd really want to know if it's 12 volts and large enough for the draw of the detector. Does anyone know????????

I hooked mine up last night. After looking at wire routing, going for the map lights would produce a less clean look than going to the fuse box.

How much for the radar detector and what does it look like once it's installed.

And yes the dash, pillars and upper surround is not trim. It's glued and bolted into place. You can't remove it. You could, but it would be destroyed by the time you got it out.

I'll snap some pictures tonight.

The V1 is $400 new. I had mine for 9 years, then it was stolen. Just picked up a used model for $230.
