Has anyone ever snaked a wire inside the A pillar on a GTS?

Trying to run my V1 wire from my Big Brakes mirror mount down to the dash area for a hardwire install. I've tried fishing a wire around and got nowhere. Is it possible? Do you have to pull the headliner to get access? I've even set my beer down to use both hands! :crazy2:

Best I could tell when doing mine is that the pillar was solid. I removed the outside trim piece, held on by velcro and it appeared to be solid from that view as well. I ended up running the wire between the inside seal and that meteal lip, up to the back top corner of the door then across the top of the headliner.

Plug the cord back into the cigarette lighter, pick a beer up in both hands so you have two and call it a day.

On a Gen 1 the power for the mirror light runs through the windshield frame (I am pretty sure.) Where does your power wire go?

From a weight perspective, I would not have thought the frame is solid. Plus, the center section does little for stiffness. Perhaps it just has no access holes.

Thanks for the input so far guys. I think what I might do is just go all the way up and over and around the door opening to the dash area.

Across the headliner by the windshield - then by the top of the door opening - then behind the trim panel to the rear - and finally under the one running along the sill.

All hidden and nothing in the door jamb. Easy trim to remove to get there.

A 14ft black phone cord from McMaster Carr is barely $4 to do the trick, and you end up right by the fuse panel. :2tu:

Dave,

I recently installed an invisicord in my 2001 RT/10. I didn't get it to work exactly like is mentioned in these threads...

I actually hooked mine up with the yellow lead to pin 7 and the black to pin 2, this setup keeps the V1 powered at all times, so it has to be turned off...

As far as I remember the A pillars are foam filled. Years ago I saw a wrecked one and was surprised at how weak they appeared.

Good excuse to get a two gauge a-pillar pod. No problem running any wires then. Good for AF and whatever..

Can the power from the GTS dome light be tapped into?

I have been looking at that recent gauge pod thread. And while looking the car over real close for this have realized that as I already on occasion bump my fingers on the windshield at 12:00 that I might also bang my knuckles at 10:00 on the gauge pod.

In regards to the dome lights they are not an *ignition on* power source, although you can always just manually turn the V1 on or off. I'd also have to mount the little adapter box somewhere for the phone cord to power cord transition.

Just thinking out loud here, could you run the cord back to the switched power source for the amplifier in the rear of the car? You could hide the wires in the interior trim panels if the A pillar is a no go.

I mounted my V-1 above the dash and wired it into the switched source for the radio when I was installing my new Alpine head unit last year, works great.

I think by the time I yanked the headliner down far enough to get to the power for the lights, that I would rather just take the route around the door opening as I described earlier. But thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't thought of the amp.

I am honored to have thought of something you didn't - this will be the only time this happens! :D

I enjoy reading all of your DIY projects, thank you for all the informative posts. Enjoy the V-1 project, the V-1 will pay for itself quickly! :headbang:

Dave if you come to austin this weekend Ill show you the way I have mine wired. You cannot see the cord at all until it drops from the mirror.

I installed mine above the mirror off to the left a little into the head liner it works great front and rear. Its up out of the way. I ran the power tucked under the head liner down the driver side between the piller and rubber under the dash and hard wired it in at the fuse box under the dash. I know most guys dont want to go into the headliner but it worked fine and its out of the way. I leave it in the Viper I dont change it from car to car.
