Is there a difference in 99 to 02 heads. I am looking to buy some used 99' heads for my 01 and wanted to know if there was a difference.

I was told the headers on my 96 GTS are different(worse) then the headers on the newer GenII's.... :dunno:

They aren't worse persay, just cast iron for the 96-97 cars vs. a lighter tubular exhaust pipe for the 98-2002 cars. Some say they flow "sightly" better. Heads are the same, exhaust manifolds just made of different metals.

Has anyone attempted to do a head swap? Just wondering how difficult it is. I would prefer to work on the car myself if this is something that does not take extensive knowledge to do.

Never been done before. You'll be our pioneer. Please post pics for all to see. :D

Really though, read through it in your service manual. That is always a good starting point.

I would buy a service manual and have assistance from a classic car rebuilder.

If you are not afraid to turn a wrench you can do a head swap. The hardest part of the whole thing is adjusting the rockers when you put it all back together, and I could teach you that in 5 minutes. Only problem would be if you ran into a bolt breaking problem or something of that nature, but it's straight forward for the most part.

Are head bolts breaking a common problem on Vipers?

Not that I know of, but it's always a possibility. I was mainly talking about other bolts besides the head bolts (exhaust, acessories, etc.) It's not the end of the world but will throw a wrench in your plans for sure. Especially for a person that is at the upper range of their skill level doing a head swap and you throw that in the mix it can be overwhelming.

I agree with Plum. You may be surprised how reasonable his port/polish package is. May be a good time for extra HP.
