Is there a way to remove the heater box located in the engine compartment? has anyone done this? this box is on the right hand side of the compartment back towards the firewall?

You're not talking about the top piece, the one that directs outside air to the fan are you? This is an easy remove, just 4 screws. One is inside the intake (hole) and the remaining 3 are around the housing. This is the piece you take off for plug changes/wire changes. It may be sealed from the factory on the side closest to your body when you are working on it. Mine had a black rubber gasket type of tape on it. Just go out and buy some wide black tape to replace it.
