Yes, I searched the archives prior to placing this post.
Yes, I burped the coolant.
Today I drove about 20 highway miles, then stopped to visit a friend at a car repair shop he owns so we could service the A/C. After the drive, where coolat temp was normal, I shut the car down for about 10 minutes. I started it up due to the interest of his two young mechanic interns, and let it idle. After just a few brief minutes, the temp gauge soared toward the red, the car puked some antifreeze, and I shut it down.
A/C switch was on, compressor wasn't turning, and fans were not running.
I let car cool down, added some coolant to the surge tank, and started the car. Fans didn't kick on. I fiddled with 50 amp fan fuse, and fans kicked on. No idea if that was mere coincidence. I let the car idle for 10 minutes. Temp gauge didn't go over 190, and the fans kicked on with A/C switch "off." All seemed well. I then drove the car about four miles. Temp started to climb rapidly towards the red, so I turned on heater full blast, shut car down as needle got very close to red (as I pulled into driveway at home. No coolant puked.
I searched archives looking for info regarding coolant relays and found none. I called Jon B., and we discussed relay location and burping coolant (Thanks very much Jon...for some reason I had thought burping was Gen I stuff only).
I let car cool down for a couple of hours, then burped coolant per web site instructions. I started car, let it idle, and fans behaved. Fans also came on every time I turned A/C to "on."
I then drove the car for about 15 minutes, mostly on the highway. Temp was fine. I drove a couple of miles on side streets, in traffic, and temp was fine. I let the car cool for 90 minutes, then drove it another 15 miles, mostly highway. All was well.
I let the car cool for 15 minutes, then did a mix of city and highway driving, about 10 miles, at the request of my VERY pregnant wife (daughter is eight days late as of today!), who wanted a bumpy car ride to help with labor (oh that'll be a separate post!). All was well.
A happy camper, we drove home (wife had had enough...). During the last drive, fans cycled as they should, and the car did fine.
As I pulled it in the garage, the temp gauge SPIKED! I turned on A/C, and still no fans.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Oscar?
Man I need to figure this out. I need this car running well for baby labor inducement ops! (RT/10 a no-go, as even pregnant women have hair gripes, and I proudly NEVER use the roof on the yellow beast).
I intend to repeat the coolant burp, and I have already swapped the fan relay with a fog light relay that has the same part number.
Any other advice?
Thanks all. And thanks again Jon B. for taking the time to assist me.
