hi helpers, i found my dream-viper, made a deal with the dealer and now, after x emails, he it telling me i have to pay him 3500$ sales tax. this is not my first car i am exporting from the us and i never had to pay any tax.

i was once told that all cars that leave the us are tax free. not right?

thanks for any help

No state sales tax on private sale from seller. Taxes from commercial sales you can recoup with government forms.

Depending where you live, you don't have to pay duty on cars manufactured in the U.S.

You may have to pay incountry taxes on the sale once imported depending where you live.

I'm a motorcycle dealer here in California and we fall under the same DMV laws as automotive dealers. If an out-of-state buyer bought from us we would not collect sales tax; however, what we would need is proof of shipment, bill of lading, freight bill, etc... We would then file this away and if ever audited by the state they will accept our paperwork and not collect tax. Not sure what state you are exporting from, but California is not known as being tax friendly, so I can't imagine other states being more strict. Could just be the dealer is not familiar with an out-of-state shipment and playing it safe, or indeed it is the law for that particular state.
