Help! how strong is the output shaft? has anyone broken one?

i am doing the viper output shaft upgrade on my 6 speed camaro, i had a one problem that led to me breaking my output shaft last weekend at the track. D&D is doing the trans and I am considering cryogenically freezing this shaft like I did the stock camaro t56 output shaft that was in the car.

raceweight is 3500 #'s even. i even ordered a Strange Billet slip yoke for the driveshaft. car on a decent shot makes about 900 fwhp. i am just wondering who has pushed the limits of these transmissions? after the trans is back in the only other weak link at this point will be my rods.

Are you getting those ET's with a 6 speed? If so those are the best times I've ever seen given the MPH. How are you shifting? I'm guessing powershifting?

As to your question, I'm not sure of the answer but I believe the Viper trans has a shorter tail, so the output shaft may be different. There are many Vipers with more HP than you, and are running fine with the stock transmission so they are very strong. However I bet your giving your trans much more abuse (shifting and launch) than the Viper guys are giving theirs, so you can't just go by HP.

PS what's wrong with your rods? are they stock?

thanks yes it is a 6 speed. so close to powershifting but not, not while i am pumping nitrous through the motor! besides the motor spins up really quick!
Lunati Pro Mod rods, forged, i am at their limit right now. cheaper to upgrade rods rather than build a completely new motor!
the viper shaft is actually longer than the camaro shaft. to make it work the shaft is shortened and my tailstock housing is opened up to accept the larger and STRONGER output shaft.

Wow, with that kind of HP, I wonder if you should employ clutchless transmission "technology."

Those guys MUST back off on the clutch so that it actually slips a little when the shift is done, otherwise, major breakage.

So for them, sizing the clutch is a big deal.

Remember all the breakage people got in their muscle cars when they went from a B&B to a bent finger diaphragm?

Also, where does the break occur on the shaft and can you determine if it is an ultimate failure or if crack initiation and propagation are involved?
