Hey Folks,

I really need some help in picking the right exhaust system. By this, I mean CATs and Cat backs for 2 Vipers.

Dad convinced me that we need after market exhausts, becasue some Viper tech convinced him that he needed one. So I did my homework so I thought, and picked Corsa Track 3 inch, with Random Technology Metal Substrate Cats.

Jon B has warned me in an email that my configuration is "LOUD" and since I considered all after market exhaust systems to be LOUD for vipers, I am guess if he is SPECIFICALLY call it out as being loud, its probably REALLY LOUD ?? !!

So what I am looking for is lighter weight exhaust system (so I dont want a cross over system), I want to rid myself of that excessive heat ("the ring of fire", no reason for 4 cats, and no reason for the exhaust to cross over in behind the seats, creating that ring of heat). I'd LOVE for it to be quiet, I am not looking for LOUD at all. Power increase, weight savings, and heat reduction, are the primary needs.

So what should I pick? Did I pick the wrong thing? Corsa TRACK 3 inch and RT MST cats?

Please help. Jon B already has my order, so If I need to change something I have to do it this morning !!

Thanks.

Jon

Oh 1 more thing, I am paxton super charged, and Dad is Complete stock NA. So we are buying 2 identical systems, even though the applications are slightly different (I'm sure it doesnt make any difference though).

have fun replacing those RT cats every 2k miles. especially on the S/C'd car where the motor torques up even more than NA.

Something tells me we'll find a pic of D outside Random Tech headquarters picketing them. :D Photoshop wizards where are you?

lol. I'm just not going to use the front hangers. Its a pretty simple fix. And I guess I beat you all to it, as 4 years ago, when I ran my B&B set up, that exact same thing happen. But Mine was worse.. The hanger fatigued off, again due to constant flexing from on and off again power from the engine... and the same thing happen, the hanger busted off, and then.. while I was on track, it caught the side sill on fire (burning my rubber hanging mount). I got black flagged off track.. Archer Racing welded it right back up. And I was back on track for the next run session.

That following Monday I called B&B and ripped them a new one. They too claimed it was the first time they ever had that issue. But because of me, they changed the design and eliminated the hanger up front. Problem fixed.

I knew the solution to this one, becasue regardless of whether its RT or B&B or Bellenger, or any other making of exhaust systems for a viper, IF you use a FRONT hanger with NO FLEX PIPE, its eventually going to fatigue and crack open the pipe. Solution is, either Flex pipe in front of the hanger (between hanger and the header) or No Hanger and solid exhaust all the way through.

Thats it. So Now back to my question, which one of the available systems is the best choice for my exhaust system? (based on previous critiria)

Thanks!!

Jon

Sorry bolt, thats a gen 2.. Gen 3's are competely different, they exit on the side. I sure wish someone had a stock headers, with Random High flow cats, and Corsa 3 inch track cat back system sound clip.. that would be great.

Thanks for trying Bolt, I know gen 2's as I tried a number of after market exhaust systems on my old one. Just trying to see what a Gen 3 will sound like. (and get people opinions on which way to go.)

lol. No worries Bolt. Thats why I put this in the Gen 3 forum, to not confuse gen 2 people into getting involved. (unless they also own gen 3s).

So far, my favorite sounding viper was my gen 2, with B&B headers, RT MST cats, and Random Tech cat back. IT sounded amazing.

If I could only get part of that in my new set up that would be great.

Just need to find out what gen 3 exhaust system works the best for what I'm looking for.

Thanks again for the attemp to help!!

I think best overall sound is Corsa and RT cats( though I hate how RT cats break at hangers) if you dont want to wake the neighbors. I heard Bellanger sounds great, but even with their cats its pretty LOUD. Corsa is one of the few that doesnt really drone. I installed Corsa first, then added RT cats, because I needed more bark. Still wasnt loud enough, so I removed cats. NOW its LOUD!! Everyone is different, but Corsa and RT cats isnt that bad. Unless you think stock sounds good, then Corsa may be loud for you.

lol. I do think stock sounds good. But I want the power increase, and the lower heat in the sills and in the car. and the reduced weight is nice too.

So WHAT random tech cats did you use, the RT Metal Sub Strate cats, or the quieter, more restrictive Ceramic ?

IT sounds like you have at one point had the set up I am thinking about getting. What I dont understand is how you went from installing corsa first, THEN added RT cats because you wanted more BARK ? Ohh.. did you have the STOCK cats in? Then pulled them and added RTs (after you already have the corsa connected to your stock cats) which did make it louder, and THEN you went on to remove cats all together?

So in your second version, RT cats and Corsa cat back (again, only if these are the Metal Substrate versions) how did it sound? Was it obnoxious? I live in the City of chicago, I dont need people ******** at me while I cruise around in the city.... or cops writing me tickets. Any sound clips? How loud are we talking?

Thanks a ton..

My vote goes to Belangers, full exhaust. The kids in my town love to hear me coming!

Yea, I did it just like you said, Corsa only, needed some sound right after I took delivery. But left stock cats in. It was too quiet and hot. So I went to RT cats, but JON B said if I wasnt SC, dont bother with metal sub, just use ceramics. So I did, added RT ceramics, a little more sound and alot less heat. But my Buddy had gone catless and I loved how obnoxious his was, so I removed cats all together, plus I was pissed RT cat hangers kept brekaing.
My other buddy just bought a B/W 06 coupe from a member here from back east, Car was shipped here. Has Corsa already installed and RT cats. He is very happy with it. Says its not obnoxious, but sounds like a Sports car. He stopped by work other day, had been awhile since i heard another Viper besides mine and my other friends with headers ,no cats. Right as he was coming down road to my shop, I could hear the Coupe coming, but not very loud. Pleasant actually.lol I say , just go with Corsa, I think you need Metal sub cats since your SC'd and your dad can go regular ceramics. It will have a nice tone and people will give you thumbs up when you rev, but you wont piss people off like being catless or lose your hearing like I am. And besides, these cars really only get noisy above 4k RPMS.

I think I am going to stick with my set up. Jon B also told me, if needed I can lower the sound by putting in those vortex cones. So I'll go loud for now, and tone it down as needed !!

Much thanks everyone !!

2002,

If I understand your post correctly, you have stock headers and are adding the Corsa Track and R/T metallic cats to your Gen III Paxton car.

This isn't loud at all, compared with most others, it's fairly quiet for Viper and it makes some power. I'll be surprised if you don't like it.

The Belanger full exhaust system is loud, really LOUD! I had to put the crossovers back in to be able to drive my 06 coupe after installing the Belanger headers and exhaust system.

Corsa Track 3 inch, with Random Technology Metal Substrate Cats.
I had this exact setup. I really liked the sound. Sorry, no sound clip. On start up, idle and WOT it was quiet a bit louder than stock. Not much different at cruise, only slightly louder. No drone. It made a HUGE difference in the heat. I think you will be pleased. I was looking for more sound so I now have Belanger headers and cat delete exhaust. It is LOUD! :D

Perfect, this is exactly what I wanted to know. Dad and I want the heat loss, lighter weight, and the additional power. We just dont want LOUD. So if your saying its just right, and for people who WANT loud, its got to have cats removed and headers added, then it sounds like I have made the right choice !!

:)

thanks a ton !!

Yep, LOUD is us. Being black-flagged at a race track because we're too loud tells you something about HOW loud the car is: B&B stepped headers; Corsa Track Exhaust; Flow-Thru Cats; VECII tuned. WE ARE LOUD...and WE LIKE IT!!!~~ So, yeah, if you don't want loud, you don't want our setup. Good luck with all your decisions! ~juli
