Help with 06 FE#188

Can anyone pass over some information, if they have it, on a 2006 Viper SRT-10 Coupe, GTS Blue with White Stripes, First Edition #188? It is a US car and not sure how it ended up in Alberta, Canada.

My Dad is back up in Canada (has finally succumb to the Viper flu) and seems to have stumbled across a mint 06 FE#188 which has about 5,000 miles on it, but seems to have a salvage Alberta title. Car is going for an absolute song.

In looking it over, he can not find a scratch on the car, it appears to be mint, yet it has not been repainted as the under sides of the sills show stone chipes, etc. We are trying to figure the car out before he ponies the cash up. In Alberta, if they steal your car, it is automatically written off by insurance irregardless of damage which just might be the case here. The cost is such that he will never make out bad, even with a salvage Alberta title. It also gets him into the Viper family too. The only thing that may be questionable is the motor and tranny as someone that steals a car is not granny driving it. However he is going to have it looked over and compression tested, etc. to see what is going on there.

Has anyone on here owned this car or know anything about it that we are missing?

You might consider pulling the carpet up enough to determine if there is any mold or former presence of water....also since many salvage cars have been impacted by floods or water damage...I would put it on a lift and make sure the diff/tranny did not sit in water.....

Get the VIN, and ask a US Chrysler dealer to run it for you...then combine that with a Carfax and see what you have.

I would also try to do the VIN check through a Canadian Chrysler dealer as well.

Coloviper.. Do you by chance remember a red with silver stripe 06 coupe I bought about a year ago for "a song"? Do you remember what you said to me about a similar deal I got on my car?

I'll bet you do...

Truth is there are good cars at great prices out there if you are in the right place at the right time and know where to look.

For instance, I have seen Vipers that were 'totaled" and given salvage titles because the windows were down in a bad rainstorm. Soaked the carpet and seats. Big deal. Pull the interior out and dry it out well. Saw a vert. and a coupe like that.
- DC execs would get Viper 'company cars" (remember the SRT guys at VOI)
You know those guys drive the cars. Might get a couple scratches or a small dent etc. They don't want to mess with selling a new "damaged" car after they turn them in. Definitely don't want the hassle and time of sending it to the body shop and selling it at the dealer. Besides, it's "damaged". The car must be liquidated, fast.
Wonder what happens to those cars???....

I think you know what I mean.

Don't let the salvage title scare you.
-Have the car checked out. Take it to a good alignment shop and let them spec. measure the frame with a laser.
-Open the side doors. Take the plastic cover (if one is still there) off of the front quarter panel and look inside the triangular hole with a flashlight. Is the color inside the front quarter panels the same color on the outside?
-maybe a scan and/or a possible leak down test on the engine.

I have read your threads and you obviously are well educated about cars. You will know if something is wrong.

I know what I said. Actually for "myself" I stand by what I said on salvage vehicles (for the most part. Ha! Ha!), but you have to understand that my Dad just needs to get into the hobby finally. The start will be enough to get him going. I am tired of hearing about the 70' GTO Judge Ram Air IV he passed on in early 1970.

Truth be known, I have literally seen tricked out golf cars at a higher price than what he is looking at paying, so lemon or not, I just can not see how he can lose, even if he has to replace the engine and tranny. Anyway he is going to have it up on a lift next week and the entire car gone through, then he will have a better idea what he is dealing with.

If he does get it, my present to him will be a shinny new multi-year VCA membership. I think he wants to take it down to Mesa, AZ when him and my mom "snow bird" out there for the winters.

I am extremely excited for him. i think you will all really like him, he is much more easy going than I am. Ha! Ha!

I agree with you. A true salvaged (pretzel) car will always be a problem.

BUT...

Check the car out. I personally saw (in person) the cars I referenced above. They went for 'golfcart" prices too and there wasn't anything wrong with the car.

To spend a couple days drying out an otherwise perfectly good car was worth saving $20K.

Buy and sell three cars that way and the fourth car is free....

Not sure if this helps, but I don't think flood vehicles are allowed to be imported into Canada anymore, so if it was imported recently, maybe theft recovery? Good luck on a good deal, let us know the total when you go or pass.
