Was out driving last weekend and I counted at least 15 Porsches in a 30 minute period at random locations along my route (There was no car show or anything like that going on). Most of them were silver or white and most of their drivers were eye-******* my Viper as they drove by. I found this to be quite funny. :D

And they were all properly taking their place behind a Camaro Z/28, since it's faster around the track than a Turbo Porsche, lol.

As a kid, my dream car was a Porsche, I had a couple posters, although I drove muscle cars once I could drive I dreamed of getting one, I'd go by dealerships, who, to their credit were great. Then one day, I made it enough and popped for a nice Turbo 911. It was so cool, for about 6 months, sold it before a year was up, the dream was more exciting than the car.

I probably see 20 - 997 Turbos daily. Don't get me started on the rest of the 5,000 - 911 variants.

Before we all get on the bandwagon of slamming Porsche, couple of facts:
1) amazing hi quality ratings - amazing when considered what designed for (minus the gt3 engine fiasco)
2) genius marketing and recognition of their customers and desires
3) highest % of any make that takes cars the to track (people actually use them vs brag about them)
4) most livable supercars on the planet (my opinion)

Factor all that in and when considering the 911, an engineering marvel for what they have done with the design and still make it desirable 50yrs later, it is an amazing piece that is due respect on all levels. There is a good reason you see so many and various drivers that have them.

All that said, I will take my Gen3 and Gen5 any day of the week, but lets give the company and product the respect they earned.

Well, considering that more than 800 000 911s have been build and a countless number of Boxsters, Caymans and so on, no wonder there are so many of them. They are nice sportscars, but certainly don't offer the wow factor of the Viper. I wonder why they still sell so many of them, especially since there are so many alternatives now a days.

If you ever see a brand new Black 991 Turbo S in Palm beach in your Viper on the street,you will looking at it way,way in front of you.....You will be very embarrassed by the distance...That is the real deal...Yes,a lot of Porches (Drs/Lawyers/Executives/people w/$$$) ,but the quality of the car and owner experience is at a complete different level than a Dodge...

But,Vipers are Cool for sure...Esp.at the firesale prices now a days...

I like 911's, but if people complain the Viper is overpriced, the 911 has nothing on it. Considering VW pockets $23,000 for each 911 sold, I'd say they have exceptional margins on them.

Knock $23,000 off a base 911 and I'd be all over it. Can't justify $100k for a lightly optioned 911, personally.

I've been looking at getting an Audi RS5 as a daily driver. Oddly enough that car is more exclusive than most Porsche's and in my opinion it looks better.

Doesn't really matter what a person drives. Who cares if it is a Porsche, Vette, Shelby GT500 or anything else.
Just enjoy the fact that you are driving a Viper & everyone is watching you....i'd trade a viper for a 991 Turbo S

Agreed. The RS5, particularly in black, is a beautiful car. My son has an S5 and he loves it.

I've been looking at getting an Audi RS5 as a daily driver. Oddly enough that car is more exclusive than most Porsche's and in my opinion it looks better.

Yea, I haven't been a fan of Audi much, but the RS5 and the A7 have caught my eye. I'd almost snag one if it enticed my a bit more. Something about the look that's nicely sleek and cool.

And no disrespect meant, I thought we were just having some playful ball busting on them.

The RS7 is just a big bag of "buy me now"

RS5 is hot, business partner had one for two years and loved it, just bought a TTS and loves it.

Porsche is ugly and handles like one of the sides of my 40 inch waiste. Akward and sloppy.

Lots of reasons a great many buyers choose a Porsche model over other performance cars, and that makes it better for them. I'm just glad a lot of them didn't buy Vipers or I'd have been forced to buy an exotic to track that was less worthy!

Do you even have a viper? If so, go ahead and trade it. I wouldn't trade mine for a Porsche; a degree of exclusivity should be "standard" on performance cars that are priced north of $100K.

So the best solution,have a 911 Turbo S for your street/straight line work and a Viper TA for your round a round the track racing.One thing you can count on, is that in 10/20 years from now ,one will be able to buy a new 911 Turbo Porsche.As things are going now with viper sales or lack of ,the new vipers are done in a couple years..

So, that is excellent for those of you that have them..The TA Viper is a the Baddest and Best looking Viper ever made so far and will bring big money in the future...

That does seem like an odd statement, Viper owners are so passionate about there cars, they would not trade them for anything, Gen 1,2 3 4 5 all argue which is best, were all nuts, but we love are Vipers. I think a more accurate statement would be if a 991 Turbo S dropped into my lap cheap I would take it, in a straight line there is nothing that comes close:usa:

It is a great time in the car world when there are so many choices to compare--let's hope this lasts and let's hope that our Viper remains in the hunt for many years!

Porsche has done a masterful job of keeping the 911 line relevant and, in some ways, dominant. Their cars are precision instruments which make the most of what they have.

That said, imo, the design lacks passion and the value is weak. (Yes, I have owned a 911). In most cases, it will scratch $200,000 to get a P-car that I find interesting. Even the temporarily flammable 991 911 GT3s (475hp and less torque) pushes close to this amount once optioned. I always get a kick out of how the magazines and other defenders of the P-Cars like to list the "base price" as the actual price of the car when in the real world you are not likely to see such a beast. I doubt you will actually roll off a dealer lot with a new GT3 (once fixed) for less than $185k plus tax.

If a GT2 was released with 680 hp for $140k out the door, this would be a serious choice. However, such a car would likely be closer to $250k.

The Viper, especially at some of the current prices, has passion in design, reasonable comfort and excellent performance. Let's see what the future holds... . :usa:

I think the only reason the 911 sells so much is that it is relatively practical. 4 seats, 4WD, reliability, comforts. And its a masterful sports car. Pretty rare combo. But since its so practical, you see 20 on the way to work. But its an easy car to justify $100K on.

I have a Viper. I have considered a 911 for my wife and kids. I think that sums it up.

I was just pointing out that a 911 can actually be used day to day with a family (within reason of course...), which I assume makes it an easier sell to someone who can't have multiple cars. And thus, they sell in great numbers, even at that price tag. I think Porsche realized that and spawned the Panamera as well.

A Viper, Gallardo, R8, etc., are not really practical in any way, and thus sales are in thousands. I wonder if the 911 would sell half as many if it was a 2 seater at that price.

SRT8 Jeep over a 911? really? Come on, lets bring some reality back into play. If price not a big deal, the 911 (any model you choose) is so much a better product. Jeep is fun and impressive for what it is, but to put both in the same discussion is a stretch. Somewhat like the S5 in the same discussion earlier...

you can call the 911 a 4seater if you like, but all owners of them know it is not in reality and not a driving force. I will say drive one though, experience the technology and the feel of the car. Totally different league than the others mentioned. Now, if comparing to a Viper, the 911 truly can be a daily driver and thus appeals to many more for that sake, can still be taken to the track, has the cache that goes with it, and can be ordered to fit virtually everyones desires and has a dealer network that knows its product and customers. It all adds up.

The last Porsche that impressed me was the 1997 Porsche Turbo S. It was a great car - a beast. I was fortunate enough to have had one for 11 days when a friend went on vacation and lent it to me. Since then, the car has had more and more tech added to it; become bloated in looks; and, except for the GT3 and GT2 models has lost most of its historical cache. Any putz can drive it and, at least in Miami, there are many putzes and many Porsches. They are a dime a dozen.

Well we have a 7 passenger SUV. So for a 'fun' car, the 911 works because of 4wd (a little safer) and 4 seats (they are small kids, it would work). A 2 seater for her is impractical - there is almost always at least 1 kid being carted around, and the front seat is not ideal. Its a bonus to be able to carry 2.

The new 911 is NOT bloated in my opinion. In fact, it has never been so sleak. They did a great job on the redesign. But yes, there are many out there if that bothers you.

I bought a 2012 911 Turbo for the same reasons you described. I thought it was a very comfortable car to drive everyday and I crammed many people(4) into it when I needed to. In my opinion it was very well made and from what I could tell came with high quality parts. It is true that these things are fn everywhere, but it didn't stop many people from giving me a thumbs up on the car. I had just lost my 2010 GT500 in the storm "Sandy" and was so excited to replace it with the 911 Turbo. I read about the car extensively. The car was beautiful, black on black six speed, no PDK for me. I just couldn't get over the 3.8 flat six, or the sound for that matter. I had a Tubi exhaust added and the car "chipped" as they described to me at the Porsche dealership. 10K later, It didn't seem to add anything exciting to the over all experience of the car. I drove the car everyday for 30 days and then sold it because the new ones were coming out and I didn't want to get killed on it. It just felt like a very nice VW to me. I don't want to piss off any Porsche people, it was a very nice car. It just didn't do it for me. I guess I'm kind of a ******* when it comes to my cars, I like them powerful, raw and loud. JD
