I guess that would be true if you place a premium on 97 over 96 on other than age, they are identical, unlike the 98 to 99 or 99 to 00, which to me justify the higher price in those years.

There are several 96 with around 15K, in the mid to upper 40 range, asking price......on this board, and autotrader.com

I'll find one.....

Well, just as a price point, there is a member of the Northern CA VCA selling a Red GTS with the gold package that has around 50K miles for just under $40K.

Prices are going back up on the blue and whites. Check out autotrader.com. Prices are up about 3-4g since 3 months ago. Looks like $45k is the bottom for now with 20k and no mods........

Hey gang, need a little input here:

In my searching for a blue/white 1996/1997, I am noticing that in the 14K-20K range is considered "higher" mileage, and the price reflects this.
How about the 40,000 miles plus crowd? Would the value not continue to diminish, or does it plateau at 14ish and stay right on up?
Thanks for any insight, nice 97 on the board classified site that has been around for a while, would consider looking into it, but feel the price would be closer to the $40K range, despite a few mods......
If I am outta whack on price I shall continue my search elsewhere!
interested to hear any comments,
Ryan

I don't know if 14K-20K miles for a 97 should be considered a high miler. (That's only 3K-4K miles a year) I guess it depends on how you plan to use it. (I don't think it would be prudent to purchase a 97 with 3K miles and use it as a daily driver, nor would I buy one with 50K miles and store it away as my trophy car thinking it will appreciate in value)
I searched for over 8 months for my 97 Blue/White and looked at many Vipers that were advertised in the Auto Trader, VCA classifieds, Ebay and local paper. I discovered that the GTS's closer to $40,000 had 35-40K miles (or more) and or were not taken care of as well as would be expected. (i.e. numerous stone chips in the front fascia, sandblasted windshield, door dings/scratches, been in an accident, etc...) The cars that looked well taken care of had lower mileage (5-20K miles) were in the low $50,000's, or very high $40,000's. (Don't forget, a valid warranty is an added value)
The VCA for sale board lists 19 97 GTS' of which there are only three in the mid to high 40K range and only one of those is a Blue/White. If you find a 96/97 Blue/White GTS for $40,000, check it out good, and if everything comes up 4.0, JUMP ON IT!
Good Luck

Yeah, aren't they like different wheels, airbag shut off halfway throught 97 production, no stripes through licence plate area and slightly narrower stripes?

I saw a high mileage 99 ACR (31,000) miles at Roanoke Dodge for
54,000. FYI. Roanoke is in Illinois I believe.

PDMRacing,

I think there are more differences in '98 than you may realize. 96-97 are similar 98, 99, 00 all have relatively important changes, 01 and 02 are similar.

thanks for the info, never can hear enough opinions.........although asking current viper owners about fair market value can get tricky with the whole Zaino till your hands bleed passion, which is a good thing....

as far as the diff between 96 and 97, my understanding is identical mechanics, lack of stripe thru rear plate area, I thought they were the same size stripes.

Wheels are positively the same, 18" came on in 98.
The airbag shut off is a nice feature, anyone know the cutoff build date in 1997 for that feature to come on?

Then again, I have no need for that shut off at this point, maybe in 9 months if last night was what I remember.....ouch

What is considered high-mileage in terms of "you will get problems with bits falling off soon"? What I mean is, look at it as a used car, not as a trophy or a collector's item. I will be buying one and taking it to Australia, and believe me, this thing is gonna get driven! From my past experiences buying used cars, it seems crazy that a car with an 8L V10 would really be worried by 30k or even 50k miles. Is this the case? If they do start to look for major work by then, WHY?

For example, if I was looking for an A to B car, and I saw a 3 year old BMW with a 3L engine and 30k miles on it, I wouldn't be too worried about buying it.

Has anyone actually put more than 100k on a Viper?

Your not going to get one for 40k even with that high of mileage. For a 97 your looking at at least 48k + that is on the way low low side with high miles.... It will be closer to 50k to 55k

Do some research. That post above couldn't be more wrong....
You can and will find some 1996's or 1997's with high mileage (40k+) were the ASKING price is mid 40's. I'm 100% sure a low 40k offer would take the deal..

All right, last question, what's the opinion on GENII pricing in the fall when SRT cars start hitting current owners garages?

Will there be a mass influx of GenII sales, and pricing to match?

ahhhhh, maybe I'll shut up and just go buy one and be done with it!

Ryan

I truly thought 18" came on in 98, good to know......

Somebody commented in another thread that GTS/RT10 pricing will remain steady if not fall a little when the SRT is released as many owners will "trade-in" their existing Viper.

Once this process stabilizes, the prices for the GTS/RT10 will likely increase (at least not depreciate as much) as there will be those that want that body style and you will no longer have the choice of a "new" vs. "used" Viper. I am guessing that the GTS/RT10 will truly start to become more of a collector's car, particularly the '97 and earlier.

I tend to think the prices will remain steady even with the trade-in of older Vipers as the demand for the original body style will only increase as people understand that this is the only way to get one of these cars. Somebody also commented about the affordability of owning more than one Viper (making more than one payment). I don't think there are that many older models that are still being financed as most of these, if purchased new, are near the end of any financing programs. So, the idea of not being able to afford two Vipers is not as relevant with the older model years (at least being able to make two payments).

In summary, I don't think the prices will ever be as cheap as they are now.

A friend once told me that if you are purchasing something as expensive as a house or a high-performance car, shopping based on value is never a good way to make a purchase decision. If you want it and you are happy, who cares if you paid a few extra dollars?
