I have an offer on my car but there is a catch....a big catch. The buyer is in Virginia and has the funds at hand. However, he does not have the time to come down and look at the car. I have e-mailed him several pictures, the good and bad (very few bad). He has sent me a 1k dollar deposit to hold the car for 30 days pending his approval when he can make it down here (Texas). I did not agree to his terms so he has now given me a different option. Half upon loading it onto an enclosed trailer and the other half if he aproves of it upon arrival. He will cover the cost of shipping if unsatisfied. All transactions per cashier's check. So.....what do you guys think?

IMO the first deal if you want to wait is the only option you have here. No way should you ship your car off without full payment.

PS. Cashiers checks are not much better than a personal check anymore as stop payments can easily be placed on them and they are often times fabricated.

Car shouldn't leave until you have all of your money, bottom line.

i agree with this. if you want to sell your car for half price, pm me right away.

lets assume the worst. lets say you ship the car with half payment, he takes the car, and never sends the rest. now what? now it becomes YOUR problem (time and expense) to go after him and your money, over in VIRGINIA.

screw that. tell him the first person with payment in full gets it, and to get his backside down to Rockwall TX if he really wants it.

I agree with these guys. He should pay you in full unless he expects you to ship him half the car ;) .

If he doesn't like the car and it shows back up on your doorstep unmolested, you can give him his money back. If he doesn't trust you enough to do this, you shouldn't do business with him.

Keep the car up for sale and tell him to keep his deposit. When he's ready to hop on a plane, take his thousand bucks as a deposit and hold it for him. A month is an awful long time to hold a car for him. Keep trying to sell it until he's closer to being ready to fly down and take a look. I bet you're eager to get payment, but be patient.

The day I sold my RT/10, I began getting calls from people with cash in hand, wanting to take it off my hands. It makes me wish I had been more patient and not come down on price. Most importantly, be safe and expect full payment before shipping. Good luck with your sale!

Full payment holds it for a month, $1K holds it for maybe a week. That's the rule, look it up :)

You might consider consigning the car (dodgevipersforsale, bj motors, premier, woodhouse, roanoke, and so on). They even might offer you enough to "cash out".

Once you "receive" payment please confirm the transfer with your bank before releasing the car.

I would make the car FOB (that is, buyer pays shipping).

Don't be taken in by any half-now, half-later stuff, or you may be very sorry you did. Take these guys advice, and demand full payment in cash.

Note- Even if you take his so-called good-as-cash cashiers check to your bank, they will likey hold it for a few days to verify funds transfer between banks. If the document is shown to be phony, you will be left with no Viper, and no money. Cashiers checks ain't as good as cash, don't believe it!

I think wire transfers are safer.

Not only would I never ship a car that I don't have 100% payment on, I also wouldn't ask someone else to do it if I were the buyer. I might do it for a good friend, but even then I'd be leery.

Ship the car to me and I'll release it once the funds clear, just don't tell him the exact mileage beforehand...

:)

Seriously though you could look into an escrow service or possibly a friend in the area. If he's willing to cover the costs you could ship it to someone nearby who can babysit while the guy makes his call.

In the buyer's defense there's no way in hell I'd send money for a car that wasn't solidly in my possession. Catch-22 situation.

Holding your potential sale for a month for $1k is NOT a logical solution.

My suggestion would be to tell him that the car will continued to be listed and all offers will be entertained. If no deal consumates prior to the time he is ready to travel, it's his.

He'll surely come up with another solution if he legitimately wants the car.

So the guy wants the car but cannot find one day to fly in look at it and fly home the same day? I would take the advise from the above posts.

Do not ship it until he pays.

You may want to offer him the option to have it inspected by a third party of his choice. Dealership, inspection service, etc

Whenever I sell a car to someone out of state, the only 2 ways I accept payment are through a wire transfer or cash in person. The only way I would accept a deposit would be a non-refundable one from the buyer, paid by wire transfer.

Thanks Everyone!
It si not everyday that I sell a Viper and therefore was thinking that maybe this was a usual way of working out the transaction. I appreciate all of the input and will hold on to it till the green is in the hand.

For those that aksed, its 53.5k in the autotrader and 51k for anyone on the site.
Thanks,
Martin

Its not your problem, its his. If he cant pay ahead of time or come up and see if for himself its his loss. You will certainly find another buyer.
