Bonestock you can't go wrong with either one. But if you plan on modding it. The 97 GTS would probably be a better choice since it has the forged motor..

I dont know why anyone hasnt pointed out the obvious yet

38K dosent get you a clean 2006 coupe....Cheapest I have ever seen period for a 2006 coupe is 47K....

Now 35K for a 1997 GTS...Thats a lil pricey...Id be willing to spend maybe 31K for that car..

For a 2002 Id be willing to spend maybe 38K...2003 SRT10 maybe 40K...2006 coupe..50K..

See what im saying....38K for a 2006 coupe is 10K under what they usually sell for....Somethings up with that..

But lets assume that they are both great vehicles and the 2006 really is 38K and a great car..

Why in the world would you even consider a 450 HP car over a 510 HP car that has a
/lesser interior
/lesser HP
/lesser brakes
/lessor handling
/slower 0-60 mph
/slower 1/4 mile mph
/slower0-150 mph
/slower 1 mile mph
/slower road course times
/9 years more age
/lesser fit and finish
/less cubic inches

I mean seriously....Now if your limited to 30's as far as spending then I can see how it could be a 2002 GTS VS a 2003 vert...And even then all the above still holds true..

But seriously a GTS vs a coupe??????

I was once a gen2 owner and got sucked into thinking the gen2 was just as fast and just as good as the srt10's.......Then I bought an SRT10..

They are considerABLY FASTER....I was 3 mph faster in the srt10 than gen 2 in the 1/4 mile...Brakes wernt even close...handling wasnt even close...

As far as looks go...

A SRT10 is a car you can park next to a ferrari and the fit/finish and lines of the car still look good..

You park a gen2 next to a ferrari and the old lights and body panal gaps ect. really show their age...

Why do I even have to keep posting these things??????

I guess until youve owned both it's just not as easy to see..

Go rent a gen 2 and then rent a gen3...Seriously....Then see if you still ask this question

Way to hate on gen 2s. IMO gen 2s look better than current vipers. I don't believe im the minority in this matter either.

Go with what YOU like. Take everything into consideration and make a decision on that.

Im tellin it like it is....Give me one real reason to choose a gen2 over a gen3....

The looks thing depends on who you talk too..The gen3 style has been graceing the fronts of video games (GRID) and filmed in movies (WANTED)...For quite some time now...The SRT10's are BEAUTIFUL cars...GEN2's are BEAUTIFUL cars...They are both 80K cars...

But both look completley differant....I like the SRT10 much more..In pics I think the gen2's look better. But in real life I think the gen3's look better...

But looks will vary from person to person...Raw numbers dont lie..And the gen3 dose every single last thing better..

Im no hater..My first Viper was a gen2...And I like a gen2 viper better than just about any car I can think of other than the newer and better vipers...

Looks like this thread got off course... But since we are comparing looks... The Gen3 coupes are very impressive in person... To me the GTS blends the best styling queues between two of my all time favorite Vintage cars... The E type and the Cobra Coupe... The Gen3 coupes look like a cross between a GTS and a Vette in a good way... There is no better here IMO just different tastes...

I was waiting for someone to point out the similarities between the Gen 3 and the vettes. The biggest problem I have with the Gen 3 is that they are too similar to a vette.

The Gen 3 bodylines are straighter than the GTS. The ducktail spoiler from the GTS being carried forward and incorporated into the coupe was the saving grace for Gen 3s. I needed the double cargo area (6' for SRT10 and 12' for GTS - approx same area for coupe). Wife has 2 suitcases and shoes that wouldn't fit into a 'vert. Always come home full. Since nearly every trip in my Gen is more than a thousand miles I obviously like the comfort of my seats and interior. My Gen 2 GTS was broken in and then supercharged within a few thousand miles of new. I now have 50,000miles on my GTS and have enjoyed every miles I put on it. At VOI X I had several people comment that MY GTS was the best sounding Viper there (400+ Vipers). Corsa tech said that the side exhaust cannot have that sound is another reason I like my Gen 2 with it's rear exit exhaust.

Good points. The 06' at 38K....does worry me that there has to be something wrong, although the owner (oringal) assures me that everything is ok. I have not seen the car in-person, it's a 9hr drive so I would be relying on a viper tech. and the owners words. I do plan on taking the car to the track and doing some basic mods, but with me that may mean F/I or something of the sorts. Thats why I was questioning reliabilty, I know the GTS can take it (with the frame recall bracing done) but I was not sure about the SRT. I think that it makes sense to go with the newer car but, the low price has me wondering. Thanks

In referance to the blue GTS...

See here is my problem..

If I had never owned a gen2..Id look at that picture and go OMG just like I did back in 2005 when I bought a gen2..

But when I look at the picture all I see now is the horrible gaps by the head lights...

The bumper and fender gap seeiming to get smaller as it aproaches the front tire...

Side mirrors that look like they came off a 20K car...

Then I remember the interior that was really good back in 1996...But not something I would want again nowadays..

I remember the engine bay that wasnt really to great looking once you got past the fact that it was a V10 450 HP engine.....

Thats what I remember from my gen2 when I see that pic...

Dont get me wrong a gen2 is a 0-60 mph car in 3.9 seonds and hits up to 120 mph in the 1/4 mile...The shape depsite the poor fit is really second to none at cars under 150K....

I would gladly add a gen2 to my stable again one day if I can afford to have both...

Their are several reasons to want one..It's old school kool with modern technology..

It's beautiful

It's fast

But when someone is considering a gen2 or gen3....Especially a gen3 coupe..For around the same price...Just a no brainer...

To me that Pic of the Coupe that was posted looks better than the GTS pics posted..JMHO..

But besides that it does everything just as well or a lil better all the while haveing better fit and finish and a better interior....

Would you rather have a 405 HP 2004 C5Z06 or a 2009 LS3 C6 with 436 HP??? To me thats an easy choice..The 2009 is better in every single way...But some would still choose the 2004 C5Z06...

I get it

Nope, I never ever chose a vette. My buddy Joe didn't want a vette. He took his $44,000 and got a full load supercharged dealer modified MINI instead of a new $44K vette. He has no wife, kids of girlfriend and after his 2001 Sapphire ACR he likes his MINI best.

To each his own. My headlight gap is perfect. If you find a headlight gap that is unequal between sides then make sure it only needs adjustment. I did find a Red/silver 01 ACR that was cheap, Fast Cool Cars - Fast Cars, Cool Cars, Low Riders, Custom, Classic, Sports Cars - Drifting. checked the car on the hoist for me, but it had a twisted hood. It has straight exhaust and was supercharged. Steering wheel shimmied really bad at 70mph and I couldn't hold it at 80mph. I walked away from that one really fast!.

When I bought my Red 98 GTS I bought it in Pekin Illinois and drove it several thousand miles home to BC. When I bought my 2001 GTS I flew to Dayton Ohio, bought the car and drove it home with a car show along the way (4,000mi.). I like the quality of my Gen 2s and the only complaint I had was that Chrysler cancelled my warranties because I was Canadian.

Well..Im not genna win this one..

Back in 2004 I had a 2004 C5 vette...Then the 2005's came out with the C6 stle..better interior..more power ect...

I still liked my 2004 shape a lot better and thought hey..12.9 at 112 vs 13.3 at 108 it's just as fast....

I never excepted the C6 400 HP vette and to this day think my old 2004 is better...

So Ill just except that you guys are just like I am

I know how you feel. If I owned a RT10 I to would of been embarrassed.

As far as gaps go. I dont think my GTS has any noticeable gaps. I can tell you that the gaps between the door and the "carbon fiber" fender on my C6Z06 is the same..

I think that a picture is worth a thousand words!

This was my second GTS. Nope, chose not to buy a Gen 3 as I much prefer the GTS.

You must be registered for see images

Blues are my favorite colors. Nearly bought Ringgold owner's 97 B/w 10.5 Roe sc'd GTS years ago.

I have Billet VR1s on my car. Too expensive to build now
WOW THOSE PICS ARE NICE ! THE PANELS ON THAT GTS ARE FIT EXTREMELY WELL. THANK YOU FOR POSTING AND CLARIFYING TRUE ARTISTIC DESIGN ,I SOMETIMES FORGET HOW WONDERFULLY BEAUTIFUL THE GEN2 IS UNTIL I SEE A PHOTO OF RETERN TO MY GALLERY ARE WHAT SOME OTHERS WITH OTHER CARS CALL A GARAGE . :D.........:eater:

gen2 rt10 is faster than a gen2 gts in the 1/4 mile..gts is faster top speed..Other than that they are EXACTLY the same car..Gaps/Interior and all..

As well the RT10's seem to bring in more $$$ as far as resale...Go check it out on ebay...

Barret jackson just sold a rt10 for 69K and a B and W GTS for 50K..Go look that up as well...

Do I think a GTS looks better than a gen2 rt10????Yes I do..But the gen2 rt10 looks more out of this world and exotic than the GTS and is and will always be the origional Viper...

I paid 41K for my 99 gen 2 RT10 back in 2006..Could have easily gotten a GTS..But hard to beat a gen2 RT10 with the top off...

Ill close with this..THEIR IS ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERANCE BETWEEN A GTS AND RT10 MECHANICALLY ...ONLY THE TOP AND REAR SHAPE..SAME EXACT CAR...

At 3380 pounds..The RT10 is light...remove the top and store it in the garage and you have a 3350 pound car...put the spare and jack in the garage and you have a 3320 pound car...

GTS is 3430 pounds..Remove the spare and jack and you have a 3400 pound car...

This is why the GTS will max out at 11.8 at 120 mph in the 1/4 mile and the gen2 rt10 will max out at 11.7 at 121 mph in the 1/4 mile...

GTS looks better...RT10 is faster

Main difference is that the GTS was built/designed for racing so it's a hardtop and a much stiffer chassis than the RT10 which is not allowed to race in many classes. The GTS is faster at the road course and faster at the drag strip because it's a stiffer car. The shape of the GTS IS better looking and was designed to be faster and more aerodynamic since it was designed as a race car. Many classes don't allow convertibles to race and neither does Lemans. Drag strip rules require a roll bar for any convertible going faster than 13.0 while a hardtop is OK until 11.5ET. Hense the ACR/American Club Racer is a GTS or coupe and not a convertible. I disagree that an RT is worth as much as a GTS.
